Recap
Â
The Upper Iowa women's tennis team knew this weekend was going to be tough. Facing the first of back-to-back Division I opponents on Saturday, UIU lined up against the Panthers of Northern Iowa and fought valiantly, but managed just one win.
Iris Verweij pulled out a tough, three-set victory at #1 singles despite the Peacocks dropping the match to UNI, 6-1, in non-conference play.
Â
The Panthers swept the doubles competition by posting a pair of 8-3 victories at #1 and #2 before earning the default win at #3. With the three victories, UNI took the early 1-0 lead heading into singles play where the Panthers continued their dominance.
Â
UNI claimed all but one singles match to close out the 6-1 victory, but Verweij would not be beaten. The UIU freshman stole an early 7-6 victory in the first set before dropping the second set, 6-1. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native rallied in the tie-breaker to earn her 8th victory in singles play this season thanks to a 7-3 win in the third and final set.
Â
The Peacocks could not follow her lead though as UIU dropped the final five matches in singles play as UNI sealed its eighth consecutive victory at home this season - the most for any Panther squad since 2008-09.
