For the second time this season, the Northern Sun Conference named Upper Iowa's
Iris Verweij the NSIC Tennis Player of the Week. The honor is the twelfth award for Upper Iowa this year and the second for a women's tennis player. Verweij went 4-0 this past weekend at #1 doubles and #1 singles as the Peacocks split against U-Mary and MSU Moorhead.
Despite the Marauders snapping a three-game UIU win streak with a slim 5-4 win, Verweij and doubles partner
Saki Kawabata teamed up for UIU's solo doubles win, 8-6. The freshman followed that up with a 7-6 victory in game one at #1 singles before finishing off her opponent with a 6-0 win in the second game.
On Sunday, the team got back to winning ways and Verweij continued her strong play. Again, UIU counted on Kawabata and Verweij to lead UIU to a doubles victory as the duo defeated their MSUM counterparts, 8-2. The Amsterdam , Netherlands native then capped her perfect weekend record as she earned a pair of wins at #1 singles, 6-0 and 6-4.
The weekend sweep gives Verweij a 7-1 record in singles play this season and a 6-1 record in doubles competition. This award marks the second time this season Verweij has been named NSIC Tennis Player of the Week with the previous honor coming back on Feb. 4.
The weekend split for the tennis team gives UIU a 5-3 NSIC record this year and the Peacocks have won four of their last five matches. Kawabata also posted a perfect 4-0 record over the weekend, while
Kelly Jachymowski wasn't far behind with a 3-1 record.
UIU returns home and will stay local this weekend. The Peacocks with play two matches in Waterloo, Iowa this Friday and Saturday. First, UIU will take on the University of Northern Iowa on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, UIU will stay in Waterloo to face South Dakota State University at 1 p.m.
