NSIC Weekly Release
This week in Peacock women's soccer… Upper Iowa (10-6-1, 10-4-1 NSIC) begins postseason play with a home match. The Peacocks host Minot State on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. The winner of the UIU/MISU match will play the winner of the Minnesota State vs. Bemidji State on Friday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. Minot State is 10-6-2 overall and 9-5-1 in NSIC play this season, finishing one game behind the Peacocks in the conference standings. The Beavers are currently ranked #9 in the NSCAA central region. The Peacocks own a 3-0 all-time record against the Beavers, including a 2-1 victory earlier this season in Fayette.
"This week will be a tough matchup," said Head Coach
Brian Diaz. "Minot State is a very organized team and they don't give up a lot of goals. They played us tough the first time here, and we expect that again."
Three Years Strong... With the win over Concordia on Sunday, the Peacocks clinched their third consecutive season finishing in the top three in the Northern Sun Conference. Only three teams can make that claim, UIU, Minnesota State and Winona State.
According to Diaz... "That speaks volumes to where this program is and how it was built by the previous staff and how we've continued that here. It's not easy to finish in the top three once, much less three consecutive years. Our program has established itself as an annual contender in the Northern Sun. With that, every year it gets tougher and tougher to maintain that level and quality of play, but it speaks volumes to what this administration has done and the priority that the institution as a whole has to put on women's soccer. It's a testament to what the players have done on and off the field, not only to reach that level, but maintain that level."
Marvelous Madie... With two goals and three assists over her last two games, Madie Edwards has matched her 2013 season total of 25 points. The Crystal Lake, Ill. native has now scored 10 goals and added five assists in each of the last two seasons. Edwards also has three game winning goals this season, surpassing her 2013 total of two. The Peacocks are 18-2 in games where she tallies a point.According to Diaz... "She's definitely a special player and so dangerous offensively. Whether she's creating opportunities for her teammates or finishing opportunites created by her teammates, she is a big piece in our offense and always in the midst of things. The work that she puts in off the field is incredible. She's a special player on a special team."
"Aimee"-zing... Aimee Wronski continues her assault on the Peacock women's soccer record book. She's has scored nine goals and tallied nine assists this season and has atleast one point in 12 of the last 13 games. In her Peacock career, Wronski ranks in the top five in program history in every major offensive category, including: points (63, T4th), points/game (1.7, 3rd), goals (24, 4th), goals/game (0.65, 3rd), game-winning goals (10, 1st), assists (15, T3rd), assists/game (.41, T2nd), shots (194, 5th), shots/game (5.24, 1st), shots on goal (96, 4th) and shots on goal/game (2.59, 1st). According to Diaz..."The only reason she's not at the top in every category is because she's only been here for two years. She works so hard on the field and is such a team-first player. I think that adds to the success and the aura that is Aimee. This year she doesn't have quite as many goals but has a boat load of assists and as teams have tried to focus on her, she's created opportunities for her teammates. She'll be the first one to say she doesn't care who is putting the ball in the back of net so long as we are winning games. She's a fun player to watch."
Last week for the Beavers… Minot State won a pair of matches, one on the road and one at home. The Beavers defeated Northern State 2-0 in Aberdeen, S.D., before picking up another shutout against MSU Moorhead at home, 4-0.
