Box Score The Peacocks women's soccer team fell behind three and a half minutes into the match against #1 Minnesota State and the Mavericks never looked back. Junior forward Korey Konfrost led MSU with a hat trick and now is tied for conference lead in goals with 14. The win gave the Mavericks the regular season Northern Sun Conference title and improved their record to 17-0 overall and 14-0 in conference play, while the Peacocks fell to 9-6-1 and 9-4-1 in the NSIC.
"Obviously Minnesota State is a very good team, with the ability to score goals in bunches," said Head Coach
Brian Diaz. "If we advance through the conference tournament, like we hope to, in all likelihood we will see them in the semi-finals and there's a lot to learn from this. We'll be better prepared the next time we see them."
Minnesota State struck first with a goal at the 3:27 mark. Senior midfielder Emily Moris took a pass in the middle of the box from Konfrost and was able to squeeze it by a diving
Kaitlyn Emanuel to put the Mavericks up 1-0. MSU went up 2-0 when senior defender Breanna Steele sent a free kick into the box, which was won by sophomore midfielder Dana Savino. Savino drew the Peacock defenders and found a wide open Konfrost, who tapped in her first goal of the game.
The Peacocks responded quickly, scoring a little more than three minutes later when junior midfielder
Madie Edwards took the ball through the midfield and passed it between defenders to senior forward
Aimee Wronski. Wronski ran onto the ball in the box, took a touch and blasted a shot past the Maverick goalkeeper to bring the Peacocks within one. It was just the fifth goal scored against the Mavericks all season.
But playing the number one team in the nation and playing against a strong wind in the second half would be too much for UIU. The Mavericks added two more Konfrost goals and outshot the Peacocks 17-2 in the second period to win the game 4-1.
Emanuel was forced to make a season-high nine saves in net for UIU. Edwards led the Peacocks with three shots, two of which were on goal.
"Kaitlyn played a heck of a game in net. She did an awesome job back there," said Diaz.
Upper Iowa will play their final regular season game of the season on the road at Concordia this Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. The match will likely determine the Peacocks standing going into the conference tournament, which starts next Wednesday, Nov. 5.
"The challenge now is to refocus and make sure we get three points on Sunday," said Diaz. "Then we'll have to see where the seedings have us for next Wednesday."
