NSIC Weekly Release

This week in Peacock women's soccer… Upper Iowa (7-4) comes home with its seven-game win streak and will take on a two NSIC opponents at Pattison Field. The Peacocks start the weekend with a match against the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., then will take on the Cougars of Sioux Falls on Sunday at 1 p.m. UIU will honor the senior class after the game on Saturday and the Peacocks will be celebrating Pink Day by wearing pink uniforms Sunday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Southwest Minnesota State is 7-4-1 overall, 6-2-1 in NSIC play this season and is ranked #9 in the central region. The Peacocks own a 6-2-2 all-time record against the Mustangs. Sioux Falls is 1-10-1 to start the year and 1-8 in conference. UIU has won both matches in the history of the two schools.

"This is a tough weekend, with Southwest Minnesota State ranked just ahead of us in the NSCAA polls and just behind us currently in the conference standings," said Head Coach Brian Diaz. "All that could flip depending on the result this weekend, so this is an important match that historically has been between two teams that have battled for a spot in the NCAA tournament."

Se7en... The Peacocks current seven-game winning streak is the longest for the UIU since joining the Northern Sun Conference in 2006. With the win over MSU Moorhead last Sunday, Upper Iowa surpassed their six game win streak from Sept. 9 to Sept. 29, 2012.

According to Head Coach Brian Diaz... "We take it game-by-game, that's what has gotten us into this seven-game win streak and it has put us in a position to achieve all of our goals that we set out at the beginning of the year. But we haven't achieved anything with the seven-game win streak, so it's important that we continue to build one game at a time. For us, the next thing we can do is take the field on Saturday afternoon and we'll take care of that game before we can get to Sunday. That's what will carry us all the way through to the end of the season."

"You Miss 100% of the Shots You Don't Take"... UIU held opponents to a season low four shots in each game last weekend, including zero shots on goal for Northern State. The Peacocks previous low had been when they held U-Mary to seven shots. In the last four games, Upper Iowa has allowed an average of 5.75 shots per game while averaging taking 23.25 shots per game and putting 13.5 shots on net.

According to Diaz... "Anytime you are preventing shots, it gives you the opportunity to go on the attack. Conversely, offense turns into defense as well. If we are overwhelming them with shots on goal, they probably aren't getting very far out of their own half of the field. As a whole, we've played well defensively, starting with our front-runners, midfielders, defenders and our goalkeeper."

Amazing Aimee... Reigning NSIC Offensive Player of the Week Aimee Wronski has been on a roll during the Peacocks seven-game win streak. Wronski has scored five goals and tallied five assists during the seven-game streak after being held without a point for the first four games. She is currently 7th in NSIC with 15 points. In a little over a year and a half, Wronski has climbed the career recordboard at UIU, currently sitting at eighth in total points, sixth in goals and is tied for eighth in assists.

According to Diaz... "It's great that Aimee has been recognized, she's well deserving of it. Honestly, this league is full of really good strikers, but we happen to think Aimee is the best one. She's a special player and a special force to be reckoned with. The accolade goes to the hard work she has put in. She's been such a good, hardworking player and such a good teammate. It hasn't always been her finding the back of the net, but often it's been her creating opportunities for other people to find the back of the net, which is really making her a more dangerous player this year."

Last week for the Mustangs Southwest Minnesota State tied and won a game at home. The Mustangs opened the weekend with a tie against Bemidji State. The Beavers scored early in the second half, only to have the Mustangs break through late to tie the game. Then, SMSU beat Minnesota Crookston, 2-0, scoring a goal in each half.

Last week for the Cougars Sioux Falls dropped a pair of home games. The Cougars lost their first game to Minnesota Crookston, giving up two early goals and eventually losing, 3-1. Then, USF fell behind Bemidji State just minutes into the game, gave up four second half goals and lost 6-0.
