Results:  vs. U-Mary || vs. Bemidji State || vs. Southwest Minnesota State

The Peacock women’s tennis team snapped a five-match losing streak and put together three straight wins in Minnesota over the weekend.  Upper Iowa defeated the University of Mary on Saturday 5-4, before taking down Bemidji State 9-0 and Southwest Minnesota State 6-3 on Sunday. The wins improve UIU’s record against NSIC opponents to 6-4 and brought their overall record to 6-10.

Upper Iowa won two of the three doubles matches as Nicole Pothen and Rosangel Espinoza picked up a 8-1 win at #2 and Meredith Worrall and Laura Alvarez teamed up for a 8-6 victory at #3.  In the singles matches, the Peacocks split with the Marauders as each team won three matches.  UIU got wins from Pothen, Espinoza and Worrall at #3, #4 and #5 as the second half of the Peacocks’ lineup got the job done and led the team to a 5-4 win.

On Sunday, the Peacocks began their day with a dominating 9-0 victory over the Beavers of Bemidji State University.  After winning all competed matches against BSU, Upper Iowa continued their solid play with a 6-3 win against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University.  UIU collected wins in two of the three doubles matches including one from Karli Loewecke and Paige Olson at #1 (8-4) and Pothen and Espinoza combined for the 8-2 win at #2.  In singles the Peacocks won four matches; Loewecke, Olson, Pothen and Espinoza all won for UIU at #1-#4.

"Wow!!! What a weekend! I am very proud of my team,” said Head Coach Joey Barnes.  “We did what we had to do to get the job done and pick up three wins. We are not the same team we were four weeks ago.  Our entire team has stepped up to baseline to show our Peacock Pride.  ‘Feathers Up’ for each our members for doing their best with the limitations we have had to overcome.  We are not, as of yet, firing on all six cylinders at the same time; but we are showing progress in applying what we are learning during practices into our match play and self-belief."

The Peacocks will wrap up their regular season this weekend in Winona, Minn. on Saturday for a pair of NSIC matches and in Clinton, Iowa for two non-conference matches.  UIU will face St. Cloud State and Winona State on Saturday and then line up against Augustana (IL) and Ashford on Sunday.
