The Peacock women’s tennis team took the courts three times this weekend against Minnesota State University, Mankato and two other non-conference opponents.  Upper Iowa fell to Minnesota State 6-3 in their only NSIC match.  UIU lost their dual to Gustavus Adolphus College by a 5-0 count; matches were retired after the decision was in hand.  The Peacocks closed out their weekend in Cedar Rapids on Sunday, but the Kohawks of Coe College earned a 9-0 victory.
 
Against MSU, the Peacocks took both the #1 and #2 doubles matches to claim a 2-1 lead heading into the singles competition.  Karli Loewecke and Paige Olson combined for an 8-4 win at #1 and Nicole Pothen and Rosangel Espinoza paired up for the 8-6 victory at #2.  The Mavericks made their move on the singles courts though earning five wins in the six matches.  The lone win for UIU came at #1 where Loewecke picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brandi Dohmen.
 
“It was a tough road trip, which is awesome for our girls,” said Head Coach Joey Barnes. “We really showed improvement in trying to do the things we have practiced.  I am very proud of my team because they have had to play ‘catch-up’ with the other teams.  They had no coach, training, conditioning and direction during the preseason; hats off to each of them for continuing to work hard when the odds are stacked against them.  A 3-4 record so far in the NSIC isn’t where we want to be, but it is a great sign of things to come.”
 
Upper Iowa will head to Minnesota in a couple weeks, Apr. 6-7, to face three Northern Sun opponents.  The Peacocks will meet the University of Mary on Apr. 6 and then face off with Bemidji State University and Southwest Minnesota State University on Apr. 7.
