NSIC/US Bank Women's Soccer Tournament Opening Round Match
Fayette, IA || Pattison Field || 1 p.m.

THIS WEEK IN WOMEN'S SOCCER… The Peacocks – who finished the regular season tied for third place in the NSIC – will entertain the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Pattison Field this Wednesday at 1 p.m. as part of the NSIC/US Bank Women's Soccer Tournament. UIU has now made the postseason in four consecutive years and will host an opening round playoff match for the second straight season. Admission to this mid-week matchup is free for students, 6 dollars for adults and 4 dollars for seniors. Tickets are a cash-only sale on the day of the game. Students get in free thanks to generous donations from Upper Iowa administration.

THE SERIES… The Peacocks have faced the Mustangs eight times in the past seven years and UIU holds a 4-2-2 lead in the series. Yet, the Peacocks failed to net a goal in both of the last two matchups between these schools. Last year's game ended in a 0-0 tie and this year, the Peacocks fell to then-ranked No. 21 SMSU on the road, 1-0. That was the Peacocks' only loss in Marshall, Minnesota.

"MADIE" PROPS… Sophomore Madie Edwards scored two goals on Sunday afternoon against visiting Concordia University to give her double-digit goals for the first time in her career. Edwards scored her ninth goal of the season in the 14th minute of action against the Golden Bears on one of the most impressive unassisted goals of the season for the Peacocks. She controlled the ball just past midfield, sprinted towards the net while juking two Golden Bear defenders before firing the ball to the back right post from 8 yards out with her left foot. The score gave UIU a 2-0 lead, but the Crystal Lake, Illinois native wasn't done. In the second half, Edwards struck again. Fellow midfielder Brianne Fenton sent a perfect go-ahead lob pass to Edwards who scored from 14-yards out kicking the ball over the head of the CU goalkeeper. Edwards has now scored seven of her ten total goals in the months of October and November.

WRONSKI WRECKING CREW … Aimee Wronski scored a team-high and an NSIC second-best 11 goals this season in 15 conference matches. She had three multi-goal games against NSIC foes and led the Peacocks to a school-record 12 wins in NSIC play. The junior played in and started all 15 NSIC games for UIU and averaged .73 goals per game taking a total of 72 shots, which was second most in the Northern Sun. Wronski also finished tied for first in game-winning goals with 6 and tied for fifth in the conference with a team-high 6 assists. The Huntley, Illinois native earned a .528 shots-on-goal percentage and totaled 28 points against league opponents in 2013. Wronski totaled a season-high five points twice this year scoring two goals and adding an assist against the Huskies of St. Cloud State on Sept. 22 and most recently against the Wildcats of Wayne State on Oct. 27.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE… Pattison Field has been good to the Peacocks this season, especially in Northern Sun play. UIU has posted an undefeated 8-0 mark against NSIC teams and a 10-1 overall record at home this season. That's good news for a team hosting the opening round of the NSIC/US Bank Women's Soccer team against a strong SMSU team.

A SPECIAL SENIOR CLASS… Wednesday's match with SMSU could be the very last home game for six Peacocks, even if UIU wins. As a group, the senior class including Briel KohlKaisha McCaffreyAmanda MillardBrooke Skaggs,Amanda SmithKelsey Taldone and Corinne Wronski have a combined 47-21-9 record over the past four years. That gives them the best winning-percentage in school history for a single class.

RANKINGS RELEASE… After splitting their matches to end the regular season, the Peacocks dropped two spots in the most recent edition of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Regional Poll. The Peacocks entered the weekend in the sixth seed, but fell after dropping just their fourth match of the year to Minnesota State on Friday. Click here to view the poll.

LAST WEEK...

For the Peacocks... The Peacocks split their matches in the final week of the regular season to finish tied for third in the conference with Minnesota Duluth. The Peacocks wrapped up the fourth seed in the NSIC/US Bank Women's Soccer Tournament thanks to a 3-0 win over Concordia University on Sunday at home. After falling to the fourth-ranked Mavericks of Minnesota State by a score of 3-0 on Friday, the Peacocks entered their regular season finale with a bad taste in their mouth. It didn't take long for them to capitalize on that emotion. The Peacocks leading scorer Aimee Wronski found the back of the net for the 15th time this year in just the 11th minute to put UIU in front, 1-0. Her shot came from a staggering 26-yards out and pinged off the crossbar before trailing into the net. Less than three minutes later, Madie Edwards made it a two-score game with her ninth goal of the season. Kali Loescher also found the back of the net before the half came to a close as she netted her fifth goal of the season. Finally, Edwards sealed the 4-0 victory with her 10th score of the season. The win gives UIU a record of 14-4 overall and 12-3 in the NSIC this season – that's good enough for an opening round playoff game at home.

For the Mustangs... SMSU tied Wayne State 0-0 in double overtime on Thursday before falling 1-0 to Augustana on Friday. SMSU failed to score a single goal in the two games. Miranda Cadena (F, 5-2, So., Highland, Calif. / Redlands Valley East) led SMSU with five shots and one shot on goal.  Cadena finishes the season with six game-winning goals which ranks her first all-time in SMSU single season history. Cadena's season also ranks her second in shot per game average (3.88), third in shots attempted (66), fourth in points per game (1.65), fourth in shot on goal average (2.24), fifth in shots on goal (38), tied for fifth in points (28-11g, 6a), sixth in goals per game (0.65), seventh in assists per game (0.35) and tied for eight in assists (6).

COACH'S CORNER…. After completing his first regular season as head coach, Brian Diaz will now lead the Peacocks into the playoffs. UIU will compete in the conference tournament for the fourth year in a row. The Peacocks finished with an overall record of 14-4 and a 12-3 mark in the NSIC. Those twelve conference wins is most by any team in Upper Iowa history and Diaz has the best record as a first-year head coach in UIU history.
