Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Match
Fayette, IA || Pattison Field || 1 p.m.
THIS WEEK IN WOMEN'S SOCCER… The Peacocks will take on two tough opponents as they enter the final weekend of conference play and the regular season. On Friday, UIU has a great chance to move up in the standings as they travel to Mankato, Minnesota to take on the Mavericks of Minnesota State (14-1-1, 12-0-1 NSIC) at 1 p.m. The Mavericks carry a 33-match NSIC and home unbeaten streak into this weekend's action. Then on Sunday, the Peacocks will return home to face the Golden Bears of Concordia University (5-11, 4-9 NSIC) on Pattison Field at 1 p.m.
THE SERIES… The Peacocks have played very well against some strong MSU squads in the past. The Mavericks own a 2-1-2 record in the series against the Peacocks dating back to 2008, but UIU has managed back-to-back ties against MSU over the last two years.
CU and UIU have been fairly even over the past couple of seasons. The teams have split the all-time series with each team taking five wins. The Peacocks however, have taken the last two games including a 3-0 win in St. Paul last season.
EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE OR TOP-NOTCH DEFENSE?... You would be hard-pressed to argue if the Peacocks were better on offense or on defense this year. UIU has outscored its opponents 38-15 to date this season and the Peacocks boast the league's second-highest scoring offense at 2.38 goals per game. Yet, UIU also holds the fourth spot in the league in goals against average at 0.93 and the team has racked up six shutouts in 2013.
A WINNING COMBINATION... Aimee Wronski has racked up a team-high 14 goals this season, which ranks second in the NSIC this season. Seven of those have been game-winners, which is the most in the NSIC. This past weekend, the Huntley, Illinois native scored two goals and added two assists to propel the Peacocks to their second straight weekend sweep in conference play. As a junior, Wronski is averaging nearly a goal a game (0.88) and her 14 goals is the most by any player in a single season at Upper Iowa since the Peacocks joined the Northern Sun Conference. In all, she took ten shots over the weekend and placed half of those on frame.
8 For "13"… Sophomore midfielder Madie Edwards – number 13 – scored her eighth goal of the season for the Peacocks this past weekend. That moves her into a tie for seventh place in the NSIC with Concordia's Alanha Anderson. Edwards had just two goals as a true freshman last year, but has since exploded onto the scene to become one of the most dangerous players in the conference.
RANKINGS RELEASE… After earning their second straight weekend sweep at home in conference play, the Peacocks held down the sixth spot in the most recent edition of the NCAA Regional Rankings. Five of the four teams above UIU in the rankings are members of the Northern Sun Conference. UIU will get their only shot at the top team in the region during the regular season this Friday as they face MSU on the road. Click here to view the NCAA poll.

For the Peacocks... The Peacocks knocked off two more conference foes this past weekend as part of senior recognition weekend. On Saturday, UIU edged out the Vikings of Augustana College as Aimee Wronski and Kali Loescher teamed up to find Nicole Poirier with a pass inside Augie's box. For the Mavericks... Second-rated Minnesota State (14-1-1, 12-0-1) continues to own sole possession of first place in the league with just one weekend remaining after trouncing Sioux Falls 7-0 at home last Saturday before battling to a scoreless draw with No. 25 Southwest Minn. State last Sunday snapping an 11-match winning streak for MSU. However, the Mavericks did extend their NSIC and home unbeaten streaks to 33 matches, which are tied for 10th and 13th-best, respectively, in NCAA Division II history. Nine different Mavericks produced points in the two-game set led by sophomore Korey Kronforst who scored her conference-leading 15th and 16th goals in the win over USF. MSU seeks its second straight NSIC regular-season championship this weekend as it hosts Upper Iowa Friday at 1 p.m., before challenging Winona State on the road Sunday also at 1 p.m.
For the Golden Bears... Alahna Anderson (MF, 5'1", So., White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake HS) had her second multi-goal game of the season on Sunday in the Golden Bears' 3-1 win over the Sioux Falls Cougars. She scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season just under 2:30 minutes apart in the first half. The first came on a beautiful free kick from 30 yards out and the second came on a header from right out front of the net. She now has a team best eight goals and 18 points. Concordia (5-11, 4-9 NSIC) broke their three game losing streak on Sunday with a 3-1 win over the Sioux Falls Cougars in St. Paul. The Golden Bears built a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game and cruised to a 3-1 win. On Saturday, CU dropped a 3-0 match to the #25 SMSU Mustangs. The Golden Bears are now 2-6 at home this season.
COACH'S CORNER…. More than halfway into his first season, coach Brian Diaz has led the Peacocks to a 13-3 start overall and a 11-2 mark in the NSIC. Through 16 games, Diaz has the best record as a first-year head coach in Upper Iowa history.
