Recap

Battling the elements and a tough opponent, the Upper Iowa Women's Soccer team overcame adversity on Sunday afternoon to earn a 2-1 victory over the Beavers of Bemidji State University. Both Madie Edwards and Lauren Rohrmeier found the back of the net for the second straight game to lead UIU to victory.

The win gives the Peacocks an 11-3 overall record – just four wins shy of tying the school record – and a 9-2 NSIC record. UIU is currently in fourth place in the conference, two spots ahead of the Beavers who fall to 9-5 overall and 6-5 in the NSIC after the loss.

From the get-go, the two teams were evenly matched as each tried to gain the upper hand. Neither team felt in control during a scoreless first half despite 10 shots from UIU and 4 from BSU.

The Peacocks found their offensive rhythm in the second half. In the 64th minute, Corinne Wronski beat her defender around the left edge and sent a perfect cross from left to right in front of the BSU goalkeeper. Edwards was there to clean it up with her right foot from two yards out. For Edwards, it was her seventh score of the 2013 season and it marked the third straight game in which the Crystal Lake, Illinois native has netted a goal.

Feeling the pressure of being down a score BSU went to work, looking for an equalizer.

Jessie Voeller started a bang-bang scoring play from about 30 yards out that would even the game up at a goal apiece. Voeller led Tiffany VanHaaften from right to left before VanHaaften gave a one-touch pass to Sarah Stram who beat the UIU Goalkeeper with a lob over her head from 7 yards out.

The score should have shifted the momentum of the game, but it didn't. It took only three minutes for UIU to bounce back and retake the lead.

In the 71st minute, Aimee Wronski took a corner kick and sent it into a posse of players just in front of the net. BSU headed it out of the way, but Jess Dickhaus was there to send it back towards the goal. Dickhaus' shot would have ricocheted off the right post, but Rohrmeier was there to deflect it and find nylon.

The goal was Rohrmeier's second of the year and second in as many games. Her go-ahead goal was ultimately the game-winner in a hard-fought finish.

The Peacocks hung onto to lead in the finals minutes despite missing a player on the field due to a foul. The 2-1 victory was the fifth game this season that the Peacocks have won a game with a one-goal lead.

UIU Standouts

Edwards (1 goal), Rohrmeier (1 goal), Dickhaus (1 assist), Corinne Wronski (1 assist).

Sounding Off
Head Coach Brian Diaz After the Game...

On the Win… "Bemidji is a very good team. We knew it was going to be a dog-fight coming in and it was. They kept pressuring us and they worked really hard defensively and in the midfield. I thought the first half was pretty back and forth between the teams, but I thought we started to gain some control in the second half. Overall, it was a good performance and we'll take the victory."

On Bemidji State's Goal… "We gave up a goal in the run of play, so we've got to do a better job locking that down in the future. They fought hard to get that equalizer, but we were fortunate enough to get that second goal and get out of here with a win."

On Madie Edwards' and Lauren Rohrmeier's Performances… "We have said it from the onset of the season – those two are special players for us. We've had conversations with those two ladies about reaching their peak levels and they've put in a lot of work to get there. I'm unbelievably proud of the way those two have played over the last couple of games. It's very encouraging to see them stepping up as we head down the stretch."

Other Standouts… "Corinne Wronski had a great game. She gave their right back (defender) all she could handle and she created a lot of dangerous opportunities for our offense today. She was dominant today and overall, she's had an impressive weekend."

Any Improvements… "I was really happy with our gritty effort today and overall, I thought we played pretty good soccer for the most part. It was ugly late in the game, but we dug our heels in when we needed to. There are always improvements that you can make and we'll continue to get better as the season progresses. We've got two tough opponents this next weekend, but that's the Northern Sun Conference for you, it's just one hit after another."
