Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Match
Fayette, IA || Pattison Field || 1 p.m.
THIS WEEK IN WOMEN'S SOCCER… As part of alumni weekend, the Peacocks will host back-to-back conference games on Pattison Field. First, Upper Iowa (6-2, 4-1 NSIC) will line up against the Wolves of Northern State (6-2, 3-2 NSIC) as part of the Peacocks' annual breat cancer awareness game. Then on Sunday, the Dragons of MSU Moorhead (0-7, 0-5 NSIC) will head into Fayette to take on the Peacocks. Both games will begin at 1 p.m.
THE SERIES... Last year marked the first time NSU defeated UIU over the last six seasons. After their heartbreaking 2-1 loss in Aberdeen last season, the Peacocks stand at 2-3-3 in the series over the last eight years.
UIU has faced MSU Moorhead ten times over the past eight years, including one matchup in the playoffs. The Peacocks hold a 6-3 advantage in the series.
SHE'S THE "E-MAN-UEL"... The Northern Sun Conference handed out their weekly women's soccer awards and Peacock netminder Kaitlyn Emanuel was named the NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this year. The honor is the fourth award for Upper Iowa this year and comes after Upper Iowa earned back-to-back road wins in overtime against NSIC opponents this past weekend. With Emanuel in goal, the Peacock defense picked up a pair of shutouts to earn two more NSIC wins and improve to 4-1 in the conference. Emanuel finished the weekend with 10 saves and the two shutouts run her season total to three as she improved her overall record to 6-2 inside the frame.
BEATING THE BEST… The Peacocks (3-1, 1-0 NSIC) have notched two wins over top-25 teams this season thanks to a 2-1 win over #23 Central Oklahoma and a 1-0 shutout of #17 Winona State. UIU also defeated last year's NSIC/US Bank Women's Soccer Tournament champions - Minot State - this past weekend in overtime.
LAST WEEK...
For the Peacocks... UIU started the weekend in Bismarck, North Dakota as they took on the University of Mary. Aimee Wronski silenced the home crowd in the 96th minute as she netted the only goal of the game to steal a 1-0 victory in overtime. The one-touch goal was Wronski's third game-winner this year and seventh total goal this season. The Peacocks followed that performance up with another win in overtime two days later, this time in Minot, N.D. UIU knocked off last year's conference-tournament champions, the Beavers of Minot State in the 97th minute of action thanks to Maggie Olson's first collegiate goal. The freshman won a 50-50 ball in traffic, dodged a few defenders and fired from 20 yards out, connecting with the back of the net. The goal gave the Peacocks to another 1-0 road victory in overtime and a 4-1 record in conference play.
For the Wolves... NSU notched a split on the weekend against Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State Mankato last weekend. Game one with the Golden Bears saw an NSU 1-0 victory as the Wolves' Anna Bondy served up a cross to Allie Macdonald for her fourth goal of the season with only 14 minutes remaining in the game. Macdonald currently leads the team in goals (4), points (8), shots (20) and shots on goal (14). Brittany Tietz recorded her fourth shutout of the year in the win. Sunday play matched the Wolves up against No. 6 Minnesota State. Two quick goals by MSU forward Korey Kronforst put NSU down thirty minutes into the first half of play. Senior Hilary Peterson answered with her first goal of the season just nine minutes later. Peterson sent a header into the top left corner of the goal came from an Amelia Taylor corner kick. NSU however was not able to answer back with another goal, as MSU took the game with a score of 2-1.
#12 Allie Macdonald (MF, So., Hartford, S.D./West Central HS) scored the game winning goal for NSU in the shutout win over CU. In game two, Allie, added four shots, one of which was on goal, in a hard fought battle with MSU. She currently leads the team in four offensive categories: goals (4), points (8), shots (20) and shots on goal (14).
#00 Brittany Tietz (GK, So., Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS/Bemidji State) recorded her fourth shut out of the season in a 1-0 Northern State win over Concordia-St. Paul. Tietz notched three saves in the game for a six save weekend. Playing 150 minutes for the Wolves on the weekend, she was not scored upon by either the Golden Bears or Mavericks of Minnesota State.
# 15 Hilary Peterson (D, Sr., Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central HS), who had been out due to a knee injury, held off the Golden Bear attack to only 12 shots in the game, three of which were on goal, in the 1-0 shutout win. In Sunday play for NSU, Hilary scored the only goal for the Wolves off a Taylor corner kick, with a header into the top left corner of the Maverick goal.
For the Dragons... Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Leintz (5-10, So., Bismarck, N.D.) has had a solid season for MSUM. In all four games she has started in goal, the Dragons have lost by only one goal, including Sunday's 1-0 loss to Concordia-St. Paul. She has allowed only one goal in three of her four starts. Leintz leads MSUM in saves (40) and goals allowed average (1.14). She ranks first in the NSIC in total saves (40), second in the NSIC in save percentage (.889), second in saves per game (10.67) and ninth in goals against average. MSUM senior goalkeeper Carole Braschayko (5-9, Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) leads the NSIC at 10.67 saves per game. The Dragons were defeated by MSU Mankato, 5-0, a day before falling to CU.
