UIU head coach
Brian Bahl knew this day was on the horizon. He had warned his team after they scrapped out four wins by a score of 1-0. Bahl knew the Peacocks would need more offense if they were to survive close matches, especially on the road. That scoring was very apparent and came in bunches over the past three weeks, so the galring need for offense dwindled. UIU scored two or more goals in three of the past five matches, but that offensive production faded on Sunday.
The Wolves leading scorer Rachel Goslinga burned the UIU defense with one goal in the first half and an assist in the second period as the Peacocks lost a 2-1 match to Northern State on the road. UIU took a season-high 27 shots in the match and outshot the Wolves, 27-6, but failed to stop the NSU offensive attack.
In the 33rd minute, NSU midfielder Tia Lopez found Goslinga with a long pass that ricocheted off a Peacock defender before Goslinga could control it and score from the far right side of the field.
The game remained a 1-0 match through halftime and for the first 21 minutes of the second period, but in the 66th minute Goslinga was on the attack again. She found Alyssa Wilde with a cross and Wilde earned the Wolves’ second goal of the match with a header through Peacock goalkeeper
Amanda Smith’s legs. That goal was the only shot attempted by NSU in the second half, but it still gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead with less than 24 minutes left.
Smith, who had only given up two goals through the first nine matches of the season, gave up a total of four goals this weekend to NSU and MSU Moorhead and earned just one save against the Wolves – her lowest total this year.
Down 2-0 and looking for an answer on offense, Peacock forward
Jill Schechinger responded as she found fellow forward
Alyssa Petersburg with a corner kick. Petersburg scored UIU’s lone goal and her first goal of the season in the 77th minute, but it was too little, too late.
The Wolves took just one corner kick in the match, while the Peacocks took a total of ten. UIU struggled to score though, and NSU goalkeeper Shaina Stein collected six saves in the match and sealed the 2-1 victory.
The loss snaps a six-match Peacock win streak and drops UIU to 8-2 this year and 5-2 in the NSIC, while the Wolves improve to 3-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play. UIU is just 1-2 on the road this year, but luckily, will be back in action at home next weekend as they host University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State.
