Upper Iowa snapped a five-match losing streak and improved to 4-2 in the Northern Sun Conference with a 5-4 victory over the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato in St. Peter, Minn.
The Peacocks took a 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of wins in the doubles action at #1 and #2.
Amanda Nunez and
Karli Loewecke paired up for an 8-1 win in the top doubles match, while
Angelica Alba and
Patricia VanderHoeven teamed up for the 8-4 victory at #2.
In singles play, the teams split the six matches with UIU earning wins at #1, #3 and #4. Nunez and Loewecke won in straight sets surrending only seven games between the four sets they played. Alba proved to be the difference as she outlasted Shealyn Bakke in a three-set match; the Peacock claimed the point with a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker.
After the NSIC match up, the Peacocks remained on the courts for a non-conference match with Gustavus Adolphus. Upper Iowa lost the match 8-1 dropping their overall record to 5-10 this spring.
Upper Iowa will head back out on the road next weekend for a pair of regional match ups with the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Colarado Mesa University on Mar. 23 and 24.
