The Peacock tennis team returned to the courts this past weekend at Gold’s Gym in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Upper Iowa faced three Northern Sun opponents, although the match with St. Cloud State will be counted as a non-conference match, and came out on top in two of the three duals running their spring record to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in NSIC action.
UIU recorded a 9-0 dominating win against Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday morning before taking an 8-1 decision over Northern State in the afternoon. On Sunday, Upper Iowa took on the Huskies of SCSU in a non-conference match and lost 6-3.
The Peacocks will now prepare for a trip to Orlando, Florida over spring break. The team will compete in five matches from March 6-11. Their opponents include Wesleyan, Rockhurst, Saginaw Valley State, Berry and Grand Valley State.
Upper Iowa 9 – Minnesota, Crookston 0
The Peacocks rolled to a morning shutout of the Golden Eagles on Saturday winning all nine matches. Amanda Nunez and Karli Loewecke teamed up to post an 8-0 win at #1 doubles, while Anastasia Dabiza and Courtney Romer won #2 doubles by an 8-3 count and Nicole Henry and Jennah Smith won #3 doubles 8-2.
With a 3-0 lead, the Peacocks continued to stay strong in singles competition. Nunez, Dabiza, Loewecke, Romer and Smith all claimed decisive straight-set victories, while Henry earned a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 win at #5 singles.
Upper Iowa 8 – Northern State 1
UIU claimed all three doubles matches versus the Wolves thanks to 8-5 wins by Nunez/Loewecke and Dabiza/Romer partnerships and a win by default at #3 by Smith and Henry. Nunez, Dabiza, Loewecke, and Romer all posted dominant victories in singles while Smith earned a win by default at #6. Northern State picked up their only win of the day at #5 singles when Megan Gilbraith defeated Henry, 0-6, 6-2 (11-9).
St. Cloud State 6 – Upper Iowa 3
Upper Iowa lost a tightly contested battle at #1 doubles as Nunez and Loewecke dropped a 9-8 (7-4) decision. The Peacocks rallied with an 8-1 victory at #2 doubles thanks to impressive play by Dabiza and Romer, but dropped the match at #3 doubles when Smith and Henry were beat 8-4.
In singles, Upper Iowa won at #1 and #2 when Nunez was victorious 3-6, 6-0 (10-7) and Dabiza won 6-0, 6-1. The Peacocks lost all four of the other singles matches. Romer lost a close match at #4 (4-6, 6-3 (10-7)); it marked the third match of the day that went to a tiebreaker and UIU only picked up a victory in one of them.
