The Peacock tennis team took to the courts at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota this weekend. Upper Iowa faced three Northern Sun opponents and came out on top in two of the three duals.
UIU posted a 5-4 win over Winona State on Saturday morning before claiming an afternoon affair with MSU Moorhead, 7-2. The Peacocks, currently ranked #3 in the region, took on Augustana, the top team in the central region, on Sunday and the matchup lived up to its billing. The Vikings edged the Peacocks 5-4.
Upper Iowa 5 – Winona State 4
In doubles action, the Peacocks took two of the three matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into the singles portion of the dual. Amanda Nunez and Karli Loewecke paired up at #1, while Courtney Romer and Nastja Dabiza got together at #2 for the wins. Both matches ended in an 8-4 score.
Upper Iowa got wins from Dabiza, Loewecke and Romer at 2-4 singles to claim the 5-4 win.
Upper Iowa 7 – MSU Moorhead 2
The Peacocks swept all three doubles matches and added four more points in the singles portion thanks to wins by Nunez, Dabiza, Loewecke and Romer at 1-4. The Dragons posted their two points with wins at #5 and #6 singles.
Augustana 5 – Upper Iowa 4
Upper Iowa took a 2-1 lead against the Vikings thanks to wins at #1 doubles by Nunez and Loewecke (9-8, 7-5) and at #2 doubles by Dabiza and Romer (8-4). The Vikings claimed the third match by an 8-5 count over Nicole Henry and Jennah Smith.
In the singles matches, Nunez scored a 6-2, 6-0 win, while Loewecke picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory. The dual was decided at #2 singles when Dabiza lost in a tiebreaker (10-8) after the first two sets went 6-2 to each player.
