LAKE CITY, Minn. - The Upper Iowa men's golf team improved its score by 10 strokes during Tuesday's second round of Winona State's The Jewel Invitational. Christian Burkhart led the Peacocks, tying for 27th with a career-best score of 146 (+2).
The Peacocks shot 299 (+11) on Monday and 289 (+1) on Tuesday for a total of 588 (+12). One over par is the team's lowest round of the season, beating out the 284 (+4) at The Mule earlier this season.Â
Burkhart's 70 (-2) on Tuesday marked a career-best individual round for the junior, beating his previous best of 70 (E) at the third round of The Mule this season. He shot 76 (+4) on Monday. Tuesday's round for Burkhart started with an eagle on his second hole of the day on hole nine.Â
The junior tallied a team-high five birdies with 21 pars. He was one of 12 players with an eagle at the tournament. He shot 36 (-1) on the front nine and 34 (-1) on the back nine on Tuesday.Â
Ethan Cahalan tied for 33rd with rounds of 74 (+2) and 73 (+1) for a total of 147 (+3). The freshman totaled a team high 26 pars, the eighth most by any golfer in the tournament. He shot one under par on the back nine on Tuesday.Â
William Benedict and Owen Davison tied for 39th, each shooting 149 (+5). Benedict had the second-best round for the Peacocks on Tuesday, shooting 72 (E). He was two under par on Tuesday's front nine. Benedict totaled 24 pars and four birdies.Â
Davison had the second-most pars on the team with 25. That was also the 12th-most by any golfer at the tournament. He shot 75 (+3) on Monday and 74 (+2) on Tuesday.Â
Joseph Grau shot rounds of 74 (+2) and 79 (+7) to finish tied in 52nd with a total of 153 (+9). Jaxx Johnson tied for 68th, shooting 163 (+19) with rounds of 84 (+12) and 79 (+7).Â
Winona State (Minn.) won the tournament with a score of 546 (-30). The Warriors shot 276 (-12) on Monday and 270 (-18) on Tuesday. Bemidji State (Minn.) took second with a total of 560 (-16).
Peyton Cochran of Winona State took first place individually, shooting 135 (-9) after a 66 (-6) in round two. Winona State's Luke Maas came in second with a score of 136 (-8).Â
Upper Iowa is off next week before competing at the Lewis (Ill.) Flyers Fall Intercollegiate on Oct. 6-7. The tournament takes place at the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont, Illinois.
