Peacocks Add to Win Streak at Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Peacocks won their third and fourth games in a row as they defeated the College of Saint Rose 7-2 and Mercyhurst University 6-1.

Game One vs. Saint Rose Golden Knights
Delaney Vetter was on fire to start the game, as she forced three strikeouts in the first inning with all three batters swinging and missing for strike three. Ari Charles hit a single to shortstop and she advanced to second on a bunt by Serah Shafer where her speed allowed her to reach first base. Both players advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt and a grounder by Laila Pelds brought Charles home to give UIU an early 1-0 lead.

Vetter forced three quick outs in the second inning, adding another two strikeouts. Addyson Alber got on base on an error, Hannah Bridgewater was it by a pitch, and Elliott Pomeroy was able to load the bases on a single to shortstop. The Peacocks scored their second run of the game on a grounder by Charles, as Alber scored on an error. Vetter once again pitched consecutive strikeouts, giving her seven strikeouts on the day through three innings of action. UIU once again loaded the bases at the bottom of the third, as Pelds, Taylor Sedam and Reagan Church each hit a single. An Alber line drive single brought Pelds home, and the Peacocks would push their lead to four on a Pomeroy grounder to second base, where Sedam scored on the play.

VanMilligan got on first base to start the bottom of the fourth inning, before scoring on a Sedam hard ground ball out to center field. Vetter added another two strikeouts in the fifth, but the Golden Knights were able to cut into the UIU lead on a two-run homer out to center field. With two outs in the fifth inning, Pomeroy singled on a line drive out to center field and she scored UIU's sixth run of the game on an Ari Charles fly ball to center field, capitalizing on a defensive error. Shafer singled on another bunt which advanced Charles to third base, and she would score the final run of the game on an error by Saint Rose.

Vetter struck out two more batters atop the seventh, recording her twelfth strikeout of the game for the final out. Vetter has now pitched 26 strikeouts over her past two games, where she has posted an ERA of 2.0.

Game Two vs. Mercyhurst Lakers
Charles and Shafer began game two by hitting back-to-back singles and the Lakers would respond by doing the exact same thing before jumping to an early 1-0 lead on a ground out to the pitcher. VanMilligan was walked on a full count at the top of the third and Pelds hit her second home run of the season as she launched a line drive over the left field wall to give the Peacocks a 2-1 lead.

Abby Buckman forced three quick outs in the third, fourth, and fifth inning where she pitched three strikeouts and forced four easy ground outs. Shafer hit a single on a bunt to start the sixth inning and she gave the Peacocks a 3-1 lead after scoring on an error. With VanMilligan on second base, Pelds recorded her third RBI of the game as she singled on a line drive to the center fielder, giving VanMilligan two runs scored in the game. Mikayla Brown pinch ran for Pelds and she scored on a line drive single down the right field side by Kylie Doty.

Buckman recorded a three up, three down sixth inning and Charles singled on a line drive at the bottom of the sixth. She scored the Peacocks sixth run on a VanMilligan hit to the shortstop, as the Lakers committed a fielding error. Buckman struck out the first batter she faced atop the seventh, before forcing a ground out and fly out to seal a 6-1 victory. Buckman threw five strikeouts in the game and did not allow a single hit in the final five innings of action.

UIU will wrap-up the Spring Games with a double header on Mar. 8 against Saint Anselm at 10 a.m. and Trevecca Nazarene at 12:15 p.m.
