Box Score 2 Upper Iowa concluded Day Two of the Spring Games with a 6-2 victory over Goldey-Beacom College and a 5-4 defeat to Dominican University of New York.
Game One vs. Goldey-Beacom Lightning
Ari Charles opened the game with her fourth triple of the season and a fly ball that sailed to center field. She scored the Peacocks first run of the game as
Rae VanMilligan picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Delaney Vetter closed out the first inning by throwing back-to-back strikeouts.
Hannah Bridgewater singled on a line drive to center field to start the inning and Charles launched a homer over the right field wall to give the Peacocks an early 3-0 lead. Vetter continued to excel on the mound as she forced three quick outs in the second, third, and fourth inning where she didn't allow a single hit, pitching two more strikeouts in the process.
With two outs and a runner in scoring position, the Lightning scored their first run of the game on a single to center field, but the Peacocks were able to force out number three on a throw to third base.
Addyson Alber and Bridgewater each got on base at the top of the sixth, and were able to advance to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Charles. With two outs,
Serah Shafer hit a pop fly over the shortstop's head, recording two RBIs as Alber and Bridgewater scored on the play. VanMilligan hit a line drive single to the left field side which brought Shafer hope to give UIU six runs in the game, securing a 6-2 victory.
Vetter pitched a complete game, throwing four strikeouts while only allowing four hits. Charles hit 2-3 in the game with a homer and a triple while she and Bridgewater each scored two runs. Charles, Shafer and VanMilligan each recorded two RBIs in the game.
Game Two vs. Dominican Chargers
Rylee McGonigle took the mound for game two where she made an immediate impact forcing a three up, three down first inning. Charles doubled on a pop fly to the left field side, and she advanced to third on a single by Shafer. With two outs,
Taylor Sedam hit a ground ball single out to center field, recording two RBIs as Charles and Shafer scored on the play. The Chargers opened the top of the second with a single and they scored their first run of the game on an RBI ground out to second base. They were able to tie the game at two apiece on a line drive hit to right field.
VanMilligan continued to thrive at the plate as she recorded her sixth double of the season on a fly ball to left field at the bottom of the third inning. The Peacocks defense forced a double play at the top of the fourth, and McGonigle was able to force out number three with a runner in scoring position.
Kylie Doty launched a fly ball to left field to pick up a double at the bottom of the fourth, before advancing to third on a Bridgewater single to center field.
McKenna Morris hit an RBI grounder to the first baseman, which brought Doty home to give UIU a 3-2 lead.
With two outs at the bottom of the sixth, Bridgewater was walked, and she was able to score on a single by Morris as the Chargers committed an error. Dominican started the top of the last inning with a double on a fly ball to center field, scoring their third run on a hard ground ball single to the right side. With one out and a runner on first, the Chargers hit a home run over the left field wall, to secure a 5-4 win.
Upper Iowa recorded seven hits as a team which each came from a different player, with Sedam adding two RBIs to give her seven on the season.
The Peacocks will be back in action Monday, Mar. 4 with a double header against Glenville State at 9 a.m. and West Virginia Wesleyan at 11:15 a.m.
