Upper Iowa men's wrestling competed at the NCAA DII Super Region V in Minot, N.D in search of berths to the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships in Park City, Kan. Seniors
Tate Murty (141) and
Chase Luensman (165) both qualified for the championship event that will take place on Mar, 15-16. The Peacocks placed sixth, collectively, out of the 11 teams in the regional with 74 total points. St. Cloud State took first with 142 points, followed by UW-Parkside with 123.
Luensman claimed first in the 165-weight class after going 4-0 on the day, bringing his record on the year to 23-5. He received a bye in the first round before pinning Brady Schuh (Wisconsin-Parkside) in the quarterfinals. His next two wins were more narrow victories, as he trumped Kole Marko (Minnesota State) by decision in the semi-finals and Anthony Herrera (St. Cloud State) in the first-place match by decision in a 4-2 margin.
Murty finished third on the day at 141, improving to 21-7 on the year after his four win-boost at the regional. He won the opening round by fall (2:51) and proceeded to the quarterfinals, defeating Braydon Mogle (Northern State) in a 7-1 decision. Murty fell to Cayden Henschel (Wisconsin-Parkside) in a tight 8-7 decision. He clawed his way back through the consolation bracket, trumping Kaden DeCoteau (UMary) by major decision and advancing to the third-place match, where he punched his ticket to the national tournament after a hard-fought win over Alyeus Craig (St. Cloud State) in sudden victory.
The trio of
Ethen Doty (149),
Eric Faught (157) and
Colter Bye (184) each had an impressive day, advancing to the third-place match, but came up just shy of earning a trip to the championship tournament. Doty nabbed two wins including the defeat of Kaden Renner (UMary) in the consolation semifinals, but dropped by major decision in the next rounds. Faught came up short in his first round of competition to Ben Durocher (Wisconsin-Parkside) in a 4-2 decision. He then battled all the way back to the third-place match, picking up three wins along the way, including a major decision, tech fall and decision in the consolation semifinals. He faced Durocher for the second time that day in the third-place match and put everything on the line, but suffered a loss by sudden victory. Bye fell by decision in his opening round to Cayden White (Minot State), but won his three following duals to advance to the third-place match, including a 5-4 decision over Wyatt Lidberg (UMary) in the consolation semifinals. He fell in the qualifying round to Wyatt Lidberg (UMary) in a 6-0 decision.
Lawson Losee (174) was the final Peacock to place in the regional, taking sixth. He fell to Brody Hemauer (Wisconsin-Parkside) in the opening bout and went on to win two straight matches in the consolation bracket, one by decision and the other in sudden victory. Losee dropped the consolation semi-final match to Cole Glazier (St. Cloud State) in a 10-3 decision, sending him to the fifth-place match where he fell by decision to Coy Gunderson (Augustana (SD).
James Davis (133),
Treyton Ackman (125),
Cameron Lopez (197) and
Jordan Baumler (285) also represented the Peacocks at the regional. Davis, Ackman and Lopez picked up two wins on the day, going 2-2, while Baumler grabbed one.
Luensman and Murty will compete at the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships in Park City, Kan. on Mar. 15-16.
