MARSHALL, Minn. - Upper Iowa's No. 8 Ethen Doty (149) qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday after finishing as Super Region V runner-up. Doty earned a qualifying bid in the most competitive weight class at the tournament, featuring five ranked wrestlers.
Doty picked up a win by fall in the quarterfinal over UMary's (N.D.) Kaden DeCoteau. He defeated No. 4 Nolan Ambrose of Augustana (S.D.) with a fall at 1:12. In the championship match, Doty fell in a 2-0 decision against No. 10 Rudy Lopez of Northern State (S.D.).
After No. 2 Jalen Spuhler of Parkside (Wis.) earned third, Ambrose and No. 13 Walker Bents of Minnesota State did not qualify in the highly-competitive 149-pound weight class.
Matthew Marcum (197) was UIU's next-highest placer, taking fourth. Marcum's two losses were in the first round and third-place match to Jordan Blanchard of Parkside. The junior picked up three wins after defeating Southwest Minnesota State's Xander Kenworthy with a fall, Minot State's (N.D.) Shafer Ehmke with a 15-0 tech fall and Northern State's Ryan Hirschkorn in a sudden victory.
Treyton Ackman (125) won the fifth-place match against MSU Moorhead's Clayson Mele in a 15-8 decision. His two losses were to No. 4 Shane Corrigan of Parkside. Ackman also defeated SMSU's Preston Xayachak by tech fall and UMary's Ben DeForest in an 11-4 decision.
Preston Klostermann (157) and Nick Mueller (165) both took sixth place. Klostermann won matches over UMary's Kaden Renner, Sioux Falls' (S.D.) Cooper Sanders and Minot State's Roman Leifridt.
Mueller upset No. 10 Payton Handevidt of Augustana in his quarterfinal match with a one-point tiebreaker win. Tanner Arjes (141) also had a win by major decision over Bronson Richins of Southwest Minnesota State.
Doty becomes the 107th NCAA National Qualifier in program history. The redshirt senior has now earned back-to-back runner-up finishes at regionals.
No. 9 St. Cloud State (Minn.) and No. 6 Parkside both qualified the most wrestlers of any team at the regional, with seven each. No. 25 Minnesota State and No. 14 UMary each had four qualifiers. St. Cloud State had the most regional champions with four.
Parkside won the regional with 146.5 points. St. Cloud State took second with 127.5 points, and Minnesota State came in third with 109.5 points. Upper Iowa finished seventh with 55 points.
Doty will prepare for the National Championships in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on March 13-14. Wrestling starts with Session I at 11 a.m. at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on Friday, March 13. The NCAA Division II Championship Brackets will be released on Friday, March 6.
