Box Score 2 Upper Iowa has opened the Lewis Flyer Invitational with 1-1 record, following a 4-0 game vs. the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs and a thrilling 10-9 victory over the Purdue University Northwest Lions where they Peacocks scored the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Game One vs. Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs
Senior
Delaney Vetter was on fire to start the game as she struck out three batters in the first inning. She recorded two more strikeouts in the second, but the Bulldogs were able to take an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to right field. Vetter put together another two-strikeout inning in the third and had eight strikeouts in the game by the end of the fourth inning. Senior
Laila Pelds hit a line drive single to center field in the fourth, but the Bulldogs were able to force a groundout to end the inning.
Minnesota Duluth recorded a single to start the fifth inning and they were able to push their lead to four after hitting back-to-back doubles. With a runner in scoring position, Vetter forced a ground out and line out which ended the fifth. She struck out two more batters in the bottom of the 6
th, finishing with a season-high 11 strikeouts in the game. Sophomore
Taylor Sedam hit a line drive double to center field with two outs remaining in the seventh, but Minnesota Duluth was able to force a third out to end the game.
Game Two vs. Purdue University Northwest Lions
The Lions started the game with four hits in a row, which included an RBI single and double. They were able to take a 5-0 lead by the end of the first, capitalizing on a pair of Peacock errors. That lead was later pushed to nine halfway through the third, before the Peacocks forced a groundout.
Sophomore
Kylie Doty singled to start the bottom of the third and Senior
Ari Charles hit an RBI triple to give the Peacocks their first run of the game. Sophomore
Serah Shafer hit an RBI single before stealing second, and senior
Rae VanMilligan would also single up the middle and eventually steal second. With runners on second and third, Pelds hit a double down the left field line which led to Shafer and VanMilligan scoring on the play. Sedam would record the Peacocks sixth consecutive hit on a single to left field and she would make the Peacocks a perfect 3-3 on steal attempts in the inning, by stealing second. Senior
Hannah Bridgewater added a grounder to second that brought Pelds home. With a runner on second, junior
Reagan Church hit her second homer of the season over the left field wall, to wrap-up a seven-run inning effort by the Peacocks.
Senior
Abby Buckman forced three quick outs in the fourth inning and came through in the clutch by forcing a groundout with a runner on third to end the fifth. Bridgewater and Church both got on base to start the bottom of the fifth, and Bridgewater was able to make it a 9-8 game as she scored on an error. Buckman put together a three up, three down inning in the sixth, recording a strikeout for out number three. VanMilligan started the bottom of the sixth by hitting a triple to right field and she would score on an RBI grounder to shortstop by Pelds. Buckman would once again force three quick outs without allowing a hit, finishing the day with only two hits allowed with 14 batters faced.
With the score tied at nine apiece in the bottom of the last inning, Doty singled on a hit up the middle and Charles would also reach first on a bunt. Shafer was able to load the bases as she reached first on an error, but the Lions were able to force two outs in a row. With the bases loaded and the Peacocks an out away from going to extra innings, Sedam's keen eye led to her being walked, which brought Doty home to give the Peacocks a 10-9 victory, where they scored ten consecutive runs.
The Peacocks ten runs are a season-high and they recorded 12 hits as a team.
Kylie Doty hit 3-4 with two runs and
Rae VanMilligan added another two runs with two hits.
Laila Pelds recorded three RBI's and
Reagan Church added another two RBI's on a home run.
The Peacocks will be back with another double header tomorrow as they face UW-Parkside at 1:30 and Hillsdale College at 6 p.m.
