Box Score 2 Upper Iowa softball went 1-1 on the first day of The Spring Games, bringing their overall record to 2-4 for the season. They suffered a 7-6 loss to start the day against Walsh University after the Cavaliers hit a walk-off in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win. The Peacocks regrouped and defeated Ferris State University 2-0 in the next game.Â
Upper Iowa vs WalshÂ
The Peacocks put themselves on the board in the very first inning after Ari Charles hit a single to shortstop, stole third base and then crossed home plate after a wild pitch. With Laila Pelds up to bat, she smashed a line-drive single to right field to drive in the runner on third, giving UIU the 2-0 advantage.
The Cavaliers scored one run in the first inning after they recorded two singles and when their third batter was up to the plate, she lined into a double play, but the runner at third advanced home after tagging up.
Walsh scored their second run in the bottom of the third inning as Upper Iowa fumbled a ball hit to shortstop which allowed them to cross home plate.
Charles, Serah Shafer and Samantha Jessie each produced a single in the top of the fourth and brought in a run for the Peacocks as Rae VanMilligan walked in her at bat, bringing Shafer home.
The Peacocks took a 5-2 lead in the 6th inning after scoring two more runs. Charles singled and Jessie reached second base on error to start off the inning. Both of them were in scoring position after stealing second and third. Charles scored after stealing home. Their next run was scored after Jessie made it home on a fielder's choice. The Cavaliers rallied with two strikeouts to close out the inning.
Walsh University went on to score three runs when they were up to bat in the bottom of the 6th, bringing the game to a tie at 5-5.
The Peacocks brought in their last run in the top of the eighth as VanMilligan smacked a ball to right field and drove in Jessie, leading 6-5.
The Cavaliers sealed the game in the bottom of the 8th as they scored one run early to tie up the game at 6-6 and then hit a walk off with two outs, defeating UIU 7-6.Â
Charlies led the squad with three hits on five at-bats. Pelds and Taylor Sedam each recorded two hits while Rae Van Milligan was credited with two RBI's for the contest.
Delaney Vetter pitched four innings, allowing six hits and one earned run in her time on a mound. Vetter collected four strikeouts. Abby Buckman threw just over three innings, allowing four runs, three which were earned.
The team tallied a total of ten hits in comparison to Walsh who executed 12.
Upper Iowa vs Ferris State
The Peacocks shut out Ferris State and grabbed a 2-0 win to finish out the day on a high note.
Schaffer, Sedam and Church each hit singles in the bottom of the second to help UIU earn their first run as Bridgewater brought in a runner after being walked.Â
Upper Iowa scored their second and final run in the bottom of the third after Pelds singled and ended up scoring after an error by the shortstop.
Reagan Church led the team at the plate, going 2-3 to lead the Peacocks to victory.Â
Abby Buckman commanded the win on the hill for Upper Iowa as she surrendered zero runs on three hits over six innings. She struck out four and only walked one batter.
The Peacocks are back in action tomorrow against Kentucky Wesleyan College at 11:30 a.m. and Lewis University at 2 p.m.Â
