Box Score 2 The Upper Iowa softball team finished their time in Leesburg, Fla. with victories over Southern Connecticut State University and American International College. They defeated the Owls 3-0 and trumped the Yellow Jackets 6-1. UIU's record improved to 7-7 overall after The Spring Games while they executed a 6-4 mark during their time in Florida.
Up next, Upper Iowa travels to St. Joseph, Mo. for the Fairfield Inn and Suites Classic held March 17-19. During their time in the Show-Me State, the Peacocks will face Missouri Western State University, University of Nebraska at Kearney, Northwest Missouri State University, Minnesota State Mankato and UW Parkside.
Upper Iowa vs Southern Connecticut State University
Delaney Vetter had a monstrous day on the mound as she led the Peacocks to a shut-out victory against Southern Connecticut State. The junior sat down 14 batters and only walked one during her seven innings in the circle.
UIU found their stride in the fourth inning as they scored two runs.
Ari Charles started things off with a pop fly to left field. Right after her,
Laila Pelds stepped up and advanced to first base after an error by CSCU's right fielder, moving
Ari Charles to third.
Rae VanMilligan singled on a line drive to right field, scoring Charles and Pelds.
Upper Iowa scored their third and final run in the sixth inning. They started the set by getting on base twice after Southern Connecticut State University committed several errors.
Reagan Church grounded out into a fielder's choice, but advanced two runners into scoring position.
Kylie Doty stepped up to the plate and hit a hard ground ball to right field, earning herself a single and bringing around
Carley Jeanes.
The Peacocks tallied five hits and the Owls recorded four.
Kylie Doty led Upper Iowa at the plate as she went 2-for-3 in the contest. Charles, VanMilligan and Pelds each collected one hit.
Upper Iowa vs American International College
Upper Iowa scored five of their runs in the top of the third inning. The Peacocks brought five across the plate after executing two singles, walking three times and capitalizing on a Yellow Jacket error and fielder's choice. Pelds was a key contributor as she batted in two runners after cracking a line drive to left field.
American International College brought in their first run in the bottom of the fourth. They started off the inning with two singles. With runners in scoring position, the Yellow Jackets were able to advance those runners on a ground out two batters later.
The Peacocks scored an additional run in the fifth inning. VanMilligan singled and stole second base to put herself in scoring position. Doty came up to the plate and smacked a ball to center field to bring in VanMilligan and earn herself a single.
UIU tallied eight hits and six RBI's.
Samantha Jessie and
Kylie Doty each collected two hits at the plate to lead the Peacocks. The Yellow Jackets recorded five hits.
Abby Buckman picked up the win after throwing all seven innings of the contest, allowing only one run on five hits. She struck out ten batters and walked one.
