RECAP OF LAST WEEKEND… Upper Iowa football earned their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season last weekend after defeating Southwest Baptist in a 35-13 decision. The Peacocks executed a balanced scoring attack as they recorded one touchdown in each quarter, and two touchdowns in the fourth.
Mitchell led the team with two touchdowns in the contest. Overstreet Jr. completed 14 of 23 passes for 172 yards, his longest toss being 49 yards. Mitchell led both teams in the ground game with 108 yards, while
Willy Camacho recorded 63 yards on three receptions. The UIU defense picked up three sacks in tonight's contest and
John Butsch led the team in tackles with nine.
SCOUTING THE NO. 10 GREYHOUNDS (Courtesy of UIndy Communications)… The season's first set of NCAA Division II Regional Rankings dropped on Monday, with the UIndy football team listed among those receiving postseason consideration. The Greyhounds were one of 10 Super Region 3 teams on the initial list.
The No. 11 UIndy football team traveled to Quincy University last Saturday and earned a 24-7 victory. The Greyhounds' defensive prowess was on full display, limiting the host Hawks to just 57 rushing yards while racking up 11 tackles for a loss. The low-scoring affair saw the teams battle to a 7-7 tie at the half, but a pair of second-half touchdown receptions by UIndy freshman Anthony Crowell helped the Hounds pull away. The go-ahead score came at the 6:11 mark of the third quarter as QB Gavin Sukup found Crowell for an 11-yard scoring strike to cap an efficient 64-yard drive. Meanwhile, the UIndy defense kept the Hawk's big-play potential in check until the final minutes when Quincy broke off a 33-yard touchdown run inside of five minutes to go—their only offensive score of the afternoon.
ELEVATING… The Peacocks have not seen three wins in a season since 2018 when the team went 3-8 in the NSIC. That year they defeated Winona State (34-33), Minot State (44-9) and Bemidji State (27-24). Upper Iowa has not won four games in a year since 2017, where they went 6-5.
MITCHELL THROUGH THE MIDDLE… Running back
Jayden Mitchell ran for a season-high in 108 yards in the team's first conference win over Southwest Baptist, highlighted by his longest rush of the season of 47 yards. The St. Louis, Mo. native scored two touchdowns in the contest to bring his rushing touchdowns on the year to six. Mitchell ranks eighth in the GLVC in rushing yards with 453 (56.6 per game).
MORE FOR MORROW… Mante Morrow leads the GLVC in receiving yards with 579, an average of 72.38 per game. He has been one of the primary targets for the UIU quarterbacks as he has acquired six touchdowns on the season with his longest reception being 49 yards.
DEFENSIVE SCHEMES… Upper Iowa's defense has executed 15 sacks against their opponents, ranking them third in the conference behind Quincy with 23 and Missouri S&T with 18.
John Butsch leads the team with 3.5 sacks for a loss of 16 yards and
Baxter Bohr falls in line behind him with 2.0 sacks for 14 yards. The Peacocks are tied for third in the GLVC with eight interceptions, tallying 61 yards.
Tyler Owen leads the UIU defense with three (tied for second in the conference).
ON THE HORIZON… Upper Iowa competes in their last road game of the seasons as they take on Truman State in Kirksville, Mo. next Saturday at 12 p.m.
