No. 15 Upper Iowa Set For Home Duals with No. 21 Northern State and MSU Moorhead

THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK WRESTLING... No. 15 Upper Iowa wrestling (3-4, 0-2 NSIC) returns to the mat in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium for the first time since Dec. 12, 2021 when they defeated the University of Central Missouri 32-6. The Peacocks welcome the No. 21 Wolves of Northern State University on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
LIVE OPTIONS… Fans that can't make it to Fayette this weekend for the duals have a few options to follow the action in real time. Using the links above or at UIUPeacocks.com/Live, fans can watch a webcast online or follow live scoring through TrackWrestling.com. Fans can also stream the dual using the NSIC Network app on their favorite streaming device. Friday's dual will have a delayed broadcast (9 p.m. start) on KCRG-TV 9.2, while Saturday's dual will be broadcast live on Eastern Iowa's CW 9.3.
 
DIGITAL PROGRAMS… Fans can access an interactive and digital gameday program for each home contest at any time at UIUPeacocks.com/Programs. The digital programs are available to fans both at our duals and those at home watching the action. QR Codes will also be located around the facility to scan with your cell phone's camera that will link you directly to that dual's specific digital gameday program.

LAST WEEK ON THE MAT... Upper Iowa had thirteen wrestlers, including five unattached athletes, in action last Saturday at the Loras Open in Dubuque, Iowa. Seven Peacocks claimed a top-seven finish including the 141-pound title, third-place at 141 and 165 pounds, fifth place at 157, 165 and 174 pounds and a seventh-place finish at 157. UIU's wrestlers posted 22 bonus-point wins including 12 falls, four tech falls, and six major decisions. Tate Murty improved to 6-0 on the season with a 5-0 day at 141 pounds. Murty won four of his five matches with bonus points including two falls, a tech fall and a major decision. Joining Murty with five wins on the day were Gunner Rodgers and Cameron Lopez. Rodgers went 5-1 at 157 pounds to place fifth with a win by fall and a major decision, while Lopez placed fifth at 165 pounds thanks to a 5-1 mark with four falls and a major. Last Thursday night, the No. 2 Huskies of St. Cloud State University defeated No. 15 Upper Iowa 34-2 in a NSIC dual in St. Cloud, Minn. The action was UIU's first competition since Jan. 6 due to a pause in training due to COVID-19 and return to play protocols that cancelled three NSIC duals. Upper Iowa's win in the dual came at 184 pounds thanks to the effort of Myron Crawford. Crawford scored an early first period takedown and added two more takedowns in the third period and a ride time point to come away with a 7-3 win.
 
PEACOCK LEADERS… Chase Luensman and Gunner Rodgers lead the Peacocks in wins with 13 apiece, while five other UIU wrestlers have posted double-figure victories including 11 by Anderlik and Baumler and 10 by Schmit, Eric Faught, and Ryan Steffen. Three Peacocks, Schmit, Faught and Steffen, have scored six bonus-point victories to tie for the high total on the team. Schmit has a team-high four falls, while Chase Luensman and Tate Murty have each recorded two tech falls and Steffen and Myron Crawford have a team-high four major decisions. Eight Peacocks have scored over 100 points in their matches this season led by Chase Luensman's 141. Steffen and Dalton Schams each have scored 123 points, while John Ebaugh has registerd 121 points and Rodgers has tallied 119 points.
 
IN THE RANKINGS… While Upper Iowa wrestling was nearing the end of their pause, a third set of regular season rankings from the National Wrestling Coaches Association was released. Upper Iowa is ranked No. 15 in the Division II Coaches Poll that was released on Jan. 21. Four Peacocks are ranked in the individual rankings as well with Kaden AnderlikTate MurtyEric Faught and Chase Luensman all earning a spot in the top 12 in their respective weight classes. Anderlik is ranked No. 5 in the nation at 133 pounds with a record of 11-2. The Cresco, Iowa native has five bonus-point wins including three wins by fall, a tech fall and a major decision. Murty returned to action at the NUWAY Combat College Open on Jan. 6. The 2021 All-American is ranked No. 7 at 141 pounds with a 6-0 record. Murty has five bonus-point wins with two falls, two tech falls and a major. Faught is ranked No. 10 at 149 pounds with a 10-2 record highlighted by three wins by fall and three major decisions. The Clear Lake native shares in the team-high for bonus-point wins (6) with Donny Schmit (133) and Ryan Steffen (165). Luensman claims the No. 7 ranking at 157 pounds in the latest release. The wrestler from Monticello, Iowa is 13-3 and is tied for the team's high-mark in wins with Gunner Rodgers. His five bonus-point victories have come in the form of two falls, one tech fall and two majors. Luensman has scored a team-high 141 points in his matches for an average of 8.8 per bout. 
 
INSIDE THE TEAM STATS… This season, Upper Iowa wrestlers (including unattached matches) have won 254 bouts in 398 matches claiming a win percentage of 63.8%. The squad has posted 124 bonus-point wins including 73 falls, 16 tech falls and 35 major decisions.
 
SCOUTING THE NO. 21 WOLVES… No. 21 Northern State enters the dual on Friday with an overall record of 7-2 and a conference mark of 3-2. Last Friday, the Wolves dropped a 24-9 decision at home against the No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Parkside. NSU is led by a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers in the form of 149-pounder Wyatt Turnquist (12-2) and 157-pounder James Burks (7-1), both are ranked No. 8 in their respective weight classes.
 
SCOUTING THE DRAGONS… MSU Moorhead comes into the weekend with an 0-6 mark overall and an 0-5 mark against Northern Sun Conference opponents. Cole Jones leads the Dragons with a 9-6 record at 133 pounds; Jones was an NCAA Division II All-American in 2019 with a 29-10 record and qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in 2021. The Dragons are coming off a pair of losses at home to No. 10 Augustana University, 29-12, and No. 8 Parkside, 31-3, last Saturday and Sunday.

THE REMAINING SCHEDULE… Upper Iowa will be at home for three of their final four regular season duals. After UIU hosts No. 21 Northern State and MSU Moorhead this weekend, the team will close out their home slate with a dual on Thursday, Feb.
10 against No. 17 Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Peacocks will wrap up their regular season at Parkside with a dual against the No. 8 Rangers on Wednesday, Feb. 16 in Kenosha, Wis. Upper Iowa will then send 10 wrestlers to Moorhead, Minn. for the NCAA Division II Super Region V Championships on Feb. 26.
