The No. 2 Huskies of St. Cloud State University (9-1, 2-0 NSIC) defeated No. 15 Upper Iowa 34-2 in a Northern Sun Conference dual in St. Cloud, Minn. on Thursday night. The Peacocks fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference after the loss.
 
The action was UIU's first competition since Jan. 6 due to a pause in training due to COVID-19 and return to play protocols that cancelled three NSIC duals.
 
St. Cloud State claimed wins in nine of the ten bouts including four bonus-point victories. Upper Iowa's win came at 184 pounds thanks to the effort of Myron Crawford. Crawford scored an early first period takedown and added two more takedowns in the third period and a ride time point to come away with a 7-3 win over Shaeden Scheidt.
 
SCSU opened the dual with four straight bonus-point wins beginning with major decisions at 285 and 125 pounds. A tech fall at 133 pounds and a fall at 141 pounds pushed the home team's lead out to 19-0.
 
In the 141-pound bout, Connor Manderfeld scored a first period takedown on a front head lock and added a pair of nearfall points. In the second period, and with the score tied at 4-4, Cameron Riggs landed a headlock and toss of his own to get Manderfeld to his back for the eventual fall.
 
Both Chance Throndson (149) and Chase Luensman (157) lost 5-3 decisions after each couldn't score the needed takedown to tie as time expired. Both Peacocks scored their points on three escapes.
 
Ryan Steffen (165) and Colter Bye (174) lost decisions as the home team continued to push their advantage. Steffen hit a takedown to score first in his match, but lost 6-3. Bye fought hard in his 6-1 loss, but was assigned a team point following his match for misconduct.
 
After Crawford picked up a win for Upper Iowa at 184 pounds, Bodie Garnier entered the circle for the final bout of the night. Garnier took an early 2-0 lead on No. 2 Noah Ryan, but eventually Ryan was able to break through for a 7-4 win to secure the 34-2 win for SCSU.
 
Upper Iowa will return to Dorman Memorial Gymnasium next Friday and Saturday for a pair of Northern Sun Conference duals at home. The Peacocks will host Northern State University on Friday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. and Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m.
