Box Score 2 The Peacock softball team picked up a 7-1 win over Fairmont State University on Saturday evening to salvage a split on their first day of competition at the PFX Spring Games in Florida. Upper Iowa dropped the opener 15-2 to Concord University in five innings.
Upper Iowa was led by Jordyn Brennan who tallied five hits and went a perfect 4-for-4 in game two. Brennan drove in three runs and scored on three occasions. Kaylee Frenette also had a big day for the Peacocks with three hits, five runs scored and a RBI.
UIU faces Hillsdale College and Slippery Rock University on Sunday before a day off on Monday.
Concord 15, Upper Iowa 2 (5 Innings)
After both teams were limited to one hit in the first inning, the Mountain Lions captured a 2-0 lead in the top of the second and later extended that advantage to 15-0 with eight runs in third and five in the fourth. Upper Iowa got on the scoreboard in the fourth with an unearned run and added a score in the next frame when Brennan's double to right center scored Frenette, but the Peacocks weren't able to mount enough of a comeback to keep the game going past the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Sydney Wilcox received the loss after allowing nine runs, two earned, on nine hits. Emily Kisch entered the game in the third inning and allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits.
Upper Iowa 7, Fairmont State 1
The Peacocks got the offense rolling early in game two with a 2-0 lead after one complete. Frenette started the game with an infield single and Brennan followed with a bunt single to give UIU two ducks on the pond with no outs. Ali Green advanced the runners with a groundout before back-to-back fielder's choices got the Peacocks on the board.
After starting pitcher Abby McKay got Upper Iowa out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half of the second, the Peacocks tacked on another run thanks to an rbi-double from Brennan. McKay then recorded three clean innings as UIU pushed its lead to 4-0 heading into the sixth frame. The Peacocks capitalized on one hit and a pair of errors to add three insurance tallies before the Falcons used two doubles to prevent the shutout with their lone run.
McKay picked up her first complete game win, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five batters.
