Upper Iowa Drops Pair of Non-Conference Contests in Missouri

Upper Iowa fell in back-to-back games as Missouri University of Science and Technology completed the series sweep. The Peacocks dropped a closely-contested ballgame 7-6 in game one before falling 11-5 in the second game of the doubleheader. Following the losses, Upper Iowa falls to 1-7 on the year while Missouri S&T improves to 5-7.

Upper Iowa fell in back-to-back games as Missouri University of Science and Technology completed the series sweep. The Peacocks dropped a closely-contested ballgame 7-6 in game one before falling 11-5 in the second game of the doubleheader. Following the losses, Upper Iowa falls to 1-7 on the year while Missouri S&T improves to 5-7. 

UIU will play its first slate of home games against the University of Wisconsin - Parkside on Mar. 6-9.

Game One: Missouri S&T 7, Upper Iowa 6

Upper Iowa was the first to score for the sixth consecutive time this season, unfortunately, the Peacocks have lost all six contests in which they gain the initial lead. UIU went up 2-0 in the top of the second inning when Jack Thode struck a home run to left field bringing home John Magnuson who walked prior to the play. Conner Klostermann crossed the plate in the next inning on his fourth solo shot of the young season. 

Missouri S&T took the lead 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning. Will Hayes tripled clearing the basepaths loaded with Miners who reached on a pair of walks and a single, Hayes then scored on a subsequent groundout to the left side of the infield. Upper Iowa evened the game at four runs apiece in the following frame. A trio of singles from Kyle Routhieaux, Thode and Ryan Hull loaded the bases before Routhieaux scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Noah Gyldenvand.

Missouri S&T tacked on two more in the fourth when Tate Morrell took one deep to left-center bringing home a Miner who walked beforehand. Missouri S&T manufactured another run in the fifth increasing their lead to 7-4. Upper Iowa rallied in the top of the seventh, Collin Meinert and Riley Braughton reached on a pair of throwing errors, the second of which scored Meinert. A.J. Freidrich then singled up the middle bringing home Braughton. The Peacocks were unable to score for a third time in the inning, resulting in the 7-6 defeat. 

Duncan Snider was awarded the loss after allowing six earned runs on five walks and three hits in three innings of work. Jason Katz went three innings in relief, giving up just one unearned run along with a pair of hits. Thode led the Peacocks' lineup as he went 2-3 at the plate, drove in two runs and scored. Routhieuax went 2-2 on the day and scored as well.

Game Two: Missouri S&T 11, Upper Iowa 5

Missouri S&T jumped out to a 5-0 lead through two innings of play. The Miners scored three runs in the first via three singles and two errors committed by the Peacock defense. Missouri S&T tacked on another two scores in similar fashion in the second following a pair of singles and back-to-back errors. Upper Iowa cut the Miners' lead down to 5-2 in the top of the third. Steve Diderrich Jr. walked to open the inning, Hull joined him on the basepaths with a base hit up the middle. Magnuson then singled into the left-field gap bringing home both runners.

Missouri S&T responded by rattling off six unanswered runs over the next three innings. Two singles, an error, and a hit batter scored two in the fourth. Four runs came home in the fifth when the Miners capitalized on four base hits including two doubles as well another pair of errors and a hit batsman. The stretch increased Missouri S&T's lead to 11-2 through five innings.

The Peacocks battled back in the seventh. UIU loaded the bases after Tanner Stein singled, Alex Baker walked and Diderrich was hit-by-a-pitch. Jathan Sibal singled scoring Stein, a double-play ball brought in Baker before Jake Dale singled to the opposite field driving in Diderrich. Dale picked up his first RBI of the year on the play and decreased the Peacocks' deficit down to 11-5. The Peacocks were then shut out in the eighth and ninth innings leading to the 11-5 loss.

Jake Hilmer was the losing pitcher, Hilmer allowed nine runs, three earned on eight hits and two walks. Hilmer also registered six strikeouts in 4.1 innings on the mound. Diderrich scored twice on the day after reaching on two free passes. Magnuson drove in two of the Peacocks' five runs with a single in the third inning.
