This Week in Peacock Wrestling... No. 22 Upper Iowa returns to Fayette and the friendly confines of Dorman Gymnasium for the first of three home duals on Friday night. The Peacocks welcome the No. 20 Marauders of the University of Mary to the mat for a Northern Sun Conference dual at 7 p.m. The Peacock wrestling team will honor six seniors prior to the dual. The six include

Jordan Gundrum,
Cody Nelson,
Brock Sorensen and
Maleek Williams.

UIU in Duals this season… The Peacocks are 6-5 in duals and 3-2 against NSIC opponents this year coming off a split with Minnesota State University Moorhead (W, 18-15) and Augustana University (L, 16-15). Both opponents were receiving votes in the last NWCA Division II Top 25. UIU won 5 bouts in each dual picking up the win over the Dragons thanks to three major decisions, but coming up a point shy when the Vikings claimed the only bonus point of the dual in a major decision. Prior to last week's split, UIU posted a narrow loss, 18-17, to No. 9 Minnesota State University, Mankato and a 25-8 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University (RV). Upper Iowa earned an eighth place finish at the NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky to begin 2019. At the National Duals, Upper Iowa defeated West Liberty University (36-12) and Gannon University (24-12) around a loss (27-12) to No. 2 St. Cloud State University to earn their place on day two. UIU fell to No. 8 Lindenwood University (26-21) and the No. 13 University of Central Oklahoma (24-12) to close out their time in Louisville. . UIU opened the season with wins over Truman State University (56-0) and Minot State University (33-11).

NCAA Leaders…  The NCAA has released an update to the standings for the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships. For falls and tech falls to be counted
they must come against opponents in the same division (i.e. Division II vs. Division II). Ties in the two categories are broken based on the aggregate time. Evan Loughman of Lake Erie University leads NCAA Division II in falls with 9, while UIU's
Justin Folley is tied for second with 8 falls and
Jordan Gundrum is in a four-way tie for seventh with 6 falls. Folley's eight NCAA DII pins have come in a time of 26:02, while Gundrum has stopped his six Division II wins by fall in a time of 13:37. The Maruaders also boast a wrestler in the leaders with Tate Barnhardt ranked tied for third with 4 tech falls against NCAA DII opponents in a time of 21:46.

Peacocks in the Rankings… Upper Iowa is ranked No. 22 in the country in the latest national poll based on a Tournament Point Index and No. 15 in the country based on Team Duals. The NWCA Division II Team Dual Top 25 is a new poll just released by the Division II rankings committee. Individually, the Peacocks boast four wrestlers in the rankings.
Justin Folley is ranked No. 6 in the country at 133 pounds.
Brock Benitz is ranked No. 10 in the nation at 165 pounds.
Dalton Hahn is ranked No. 10 in the country at 184 pounds, while
Nick Baumler rounds out the nationally-ranked group at No. 9 in the 197-pound weight class.

Scouting the No. 20 Marauders… The Marauders are 4-3 in duals this season including a 2-3 mark against NSIC foes. UMary defeated Minot State (31-12 and 20-18) and MSU Moorhead (24-10), but dropped duals to Northern State University (24-12), St. Cloud State University (35-4) and Minnesota State (22-18). UMary is led by the tandem of Tate Barnhardt (No. 3, 133) and Phillip Springsteen (No. 8, 174).
Tate Barnhardt came into the week with a 15-4 record on the season, going 12-2 against DII opponents. Barnhardt is 6-0 in duals so far this season. Springsteen was 10-3 on the season and 8-2 against DII opponents after last weekend's action.

Looking Ahead… Upper Iowa will close out the regular season next week with a pair of duals against the No. 1 Huskies of St. Cloud State University on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. and the Wolves of Northern State University on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. The final dual will also serve as the Mike Olson Alumni Dual for the wrestling program.
