The Upper Iowa indoor track and field team got back in to action on Friday as part of the Minnesota State Invitational hosted by Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Peacocks placed fifth with 31 points scored and broke a pair of school records in the process. UIU scored their 31 points in four events behind the efforts of five athletes that placed in the top eight of their events.
Brinn Grunder won the shot put and took second in the weight throw while setting a new program record to account for 18 of UIU's points. The junior nearly pulled off the sweep of the throwing events coming up just 0.27 meters shy of claiming the event title in the weight throw as well. Grunder claimed the top throw in the shot put with a mark of 13.40 meters and broke the Upper Iowa school record with a distance of 16.10 meters in the weight throw.Â
Cassidy Wilson set a new program record in the 600 meter while placing third and gaining 6 points on her own. Wilson's time of 1:40.95 is now the UIU record pace and the sophomore was only a second off the pace of the runner up and two seconds behind the event winner.
Wilson also helped the Peacocks score a point as part of the 4x400Â meter relay team. Wilson teamed up with
Breyanna Hill,
Erica Kelly and
Jenna Ross to place third as a team in a time of 4:11.62. The team earned 6 more points for the relay team's effort. The final point for UIU came in the 600 meter when Hill ran the eighth best time of 1:53.03.
Other Peacock event leaders included
Allison Trenkamp and Kelly in the 60 meters (8.39, 16th/17th), Kelly in the 200 meters (27.31, 10th), Christonna Shafranski in the 400 meters (1:08.02) and Makenzie Soeken in the long jump (4.74 meters, 11th) and in the 60 meter hurdles (10.32, 8th-prelims).

Upper Iowa will head back to Mankato, Minn. for the Mark Schuck Open and Multi event on Jan. 25-26.
