The Peacocks wrestling team, ranked No. 6 in the preseason NWCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, sent 25 wrestlers to the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa. Eighteen of those wrestlers wore the Peacock blue and white and toed the line on the mats at Luther College. UIU claimed 12 place winners by the end of the day and two Elite Bracket Champions.
 
Nick Baumler (No. 3 NCAA DII, 197) and Dalton Hahn (No. 6 NCAA DII, 184) both claimed titles in their respective weight classes.
 
Baumler posted a 20-4 tech fall win in his opening match and followed it up with a fall in the third period of his second match to reach the semifinals. The junior picked up a 5-2 decision to earn a shot in the finals. Baumler defeated Kobe Woods of Wartburg, a transfer from Purdue University, 6-5 to win the title and improve to 5-0 on the year.
 
Hahn won his second straight title at 184 pounds thanks to a 4-0 record. The sophomore scored wins by fall in his first two matches and then won by injury default (5:23) in the semifinals. Hahn posted a 6-1 decision in the finals over Brandon Moen of Minnesota State University, Mankato.
 
Justin Folley and Maleek Williams (No. 1 NCAA DII, 125) both wrestled in the 133-pound bracket. Folley won a pair of matches by tech fall (19-4) and by decision 12-7 before dropping to the consolation bracket due to a tech fall loss to Brock Rathbun of Wartburg. Folley met Williams in the third place match; there was no bout. Williams scored a 23-7 tech fall win to open his day and then won by decision of Kyle Clough 12-7 to reach the semis. Brock Henderson of Coe edged Williams 7-6 to push the Peacock wrestler to the backside.
 
Jordan Gundrum (174) placed third and scored four bonus-point wins with a fall (2:09) and three tech fall wins (18-0, 17-0 and 16-1). The lone blemish on Gundrum's sheet for the day was a 2-0 semifinal loss to Shane Siewert of Rochester Community and Technical College.
 
Mac Spotts went 2-2 with a tech fall to claim fourth place at 157 pounds, while Connor Williams placed 5th at 174 pounds with a 4-1 record. Williams earned a pair of wins by fall. Chase Seaney (141) went 3-2 to place sixth, and Tucker Black (165) was 4-3 on the day with wins by fall, tech and major to place sixth. Jacob Ragsdale rounded out the sixth place trio with a 1-2 mark, but his win came by fall. Bryon Boleyn placed 8th at 165 pounds with a 2-2 record, while Dalton Nelson went 3-2 to place 8th at 174 pounds.
 
The Peacocks will get back on the mats in Minneapolis on Saturday, Nov. 17. Upper Iowa will compete in the high-powered Auggie Open hosted by Augsburg University.
