THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK SOFTBALL…
Upper Iowa (4-10) will head to Missouri for the second time this season to partake in the HyVee Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. Missouri Western State University is the host for the three-day tournament, as UIU will play six games over that time span, all against opponents from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). PEACOCK STORYLINES...
500-CLUB: When Upper Iowa matches up with Missouri Southern State on Sunday morning, it will be the 500th game for Peacock softball as a member of NCAA Division II. UIU moved up from DIII in the 2003 year, and was a provisional institution until 2006, when they joined the Northern Sun Conference. 2017 marks the 14th season at the DII level.
HALF-A-DOZEN: The Peacocks are 3-2 this season when they score at least six runs. On the other side of the spectrum, Upper Iowa is 1-6 when they score no more than two runs in a game. UIU will look to get some run-production at the plate this weekend in Missouri.
#1 OPTION: Sammy Garrett (#1) has been one of the top hitters in the lineup so far this season for UIU. Garrett leads the team in average (.349), hits (15), RBIs (8), and is second in on-base percentage (.378) and third in slugging (.465).
NSIC PRESEASON POLL: The Peacocks were picked 7th in the 16-team league after accumulating 138 points in the NSIC preseason coaches poll. Minnesota State was the unanimous pick to win the conference.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS…
FORT HAYS STATE: The Tigers (8-12, 2-0 MIAA) have won three straight, including a pair of home games over Northeastern State to open play in the MIAA.
CENTRAL MISSOURI: The Jennies (7-14, 1-1 MIAA) are coming off a home split against Southwest Baptist to open conference play. UCM lost 8-0 in 5 innings before answering with an 8-0 win in 5 innings in game two.
#9 CENTRAL OKLAHOMA: The Bronchos (13-3, 2-0 MIAA) are ranked ninth in the country, and are riding a seven-game winning streak, allowing just 10 runs in that time span.
PITTSBURG STATE: The Gorillas (17-7, 3-1 MIAA) have won six of their last eight games, and defeated UIU in three-of-four previously in Pittsburg, Kan.
MISSOURI SOUTHERN STATE: The Lions (9-16, 1-3 MIAA) have dropped three of its last four, including a pair of losses to Emporia State on the road.
WASHBURN: The Ichabods (11-18, 1-7 MIAA) have already played 29 games this season, and defeated Missouri Southern State on Mar. 10 to snap a 7-game losing streak to open MIAA play. Washburn defeated UIU 8-4 back on Feb. 17 in Bentonville, Ark.
