Box Score 2 The Peacock softball team stretched their current winning streak to 10 games with two victories over Slippery Rock, 1-0 in eight innings, and Pittsburg-Johnstown, 7-4 in Clermont, Fla. UIU had beaten both teams earlier in the week, with a 7-2 win over SRU on Monday, and a 3-0 victory over UPJ on Tuesday.
Â
Upper Iowa scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning on a passed ball to beat the Rocks in the early game. In the afternoon affair with the Mountain Cats, UIU exploded for four third inning runs to overcome an early 2-0 deficit.
Â
In the victory over Pitt-Johnstown, senior
Erica Kirgan hit her 25th career home run, breaking the school record. Freshman
Courtney Clayberg earned the win in game two, the first of her career.
Â
Upper Iowa plays its final two games on the spring break trip on Friday. UIU will open with Nova Southeastern University at 5 p.m., followed by a meeting with Ashland University at 7 p.m.
Â
Upper Iowa 1, Slippery Rock 0 (8 innings)Â
Upper Iowa won its ninth straight game and remained perfect in the state of Florida with a 1-0 victory over Slippery Rock on Thursday afternoon. The game was forced to go to extra innings after neither team could manage to bring home a run in the first seven frames. In the top of the eighth, UIU loaded the bases thanks to a placed runner on second, an error and a single. Two batters later, freshman
Sami Kay Shafranski scored the game-winning run on a passed ball.
Â
Senior pitcher
Jacqueline Flood earned her fourth straight win and improved her record on the season to 5-4. The Mt. Vernon native threw all eight innings for UIU and allowed just four hits in the complete game shutout. Flood struck out five and walked just one.
Â
The Peacocks had just three hits in the game and had runners reach base in just two of the first seven innings. However, it was the Peacock defense and a strong pitching performance from Flood that kept SRU at bay all game long. Flood had a no-hitter heading into the fourth inning and didn't allow a Rock runner to reach third until the sixth inning.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, UIU was in a bit of a "pickle" but found a way to turn the tides. SRU had runners on first and third with no outs after a pair of singles started the inning. The Peacocks were able to get both runners in a pickle and turn a pick-off attempt into a double play by getting both runners.
Â
In the eighth, Shafranski was placed on second and she moved to third when senior
Tara Duran rached on an error. Junior
Katie Sammons then reached on an infield single to load the bases. Two batters later, Shafranski scored on a passed ball to give UIU the 1-0 lead.
Â
SRU was unable to move its placed runner to third on the first out because the leadoff batter popped out to third. The next batter grounded out and allowed the placed runner to move to third, but Flood struck out a pinch hitter to end the game.Â
Â
Upper Iowa 7, Pittsburgh-Johnstown 4Â
The Peacocks made it a round 10 wins in a row when they beat Pitt-Johnstown 7-4 in the afternoon game on Thursday afternoon. UIU had to rally in the game, overcoming an early two run deficit with six unanswered runs to pick up the victory.
Â
Freshman
Courtney Clayberg earned her first career collegiate win in the game, coming on in relief in the fourth inning. Clayberg threw 3.2 innings, allowed just one run on one hit. She struck out five and walked three.
Â
UPJ got on the board early in the game as the Mountain Cats scored on an RBI double in the bottom of the first and added a solo home run in the second to go up 2-0.
Â
UIU rallied for four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead, including senior
Erica Kirgan's first home run of the year and 25th of her career, a new school record for career home runs.
Â
The Peacocks added two more runs in the fourth when Sammons launched her first home run of the year, scoring senior
Lauren Marlinghaus. Pitt-Johnstown responded with another solo home run of their own to make it 6-3 after four innings.
Â
The Mountain Cats threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but managed just one run. UIU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a double by sophomore
Sammy Garrett, then left it in the hands of Clayberg, who struck out the side in the bottom half of the final inning.
