Logan Hopp's Run at National Championships Comes to an End

UIU's redshirt sophomore went 1-2 in Sessions One and Two at the 2015 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo.

Upper Iowa's heavyweight, Logan Hopp, had his season come to an end Friday evening during Session Two at the 2015 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo.  Hopp lost his opening round match, but bounced back with a win in the consolation brackets' first round.  The New Hampton, Iowa native came up shy during the All-American round and finished his run at the championships with a 1-2 record.

Hopp, who will finish his second year at the varsity level with a 32-8 record, lost to Andew Ewers of Shorter University by a 7-2 count.  He scored the first point of the match on an escape in the second period, but left the second frame tied at 2 after Ewers scored a takedown and Hopp escaped before the buzzer.  The grappler from Shorter scored five unanswered during the third period thanks to an escape, a takedown and two nearfall points.

In the first round of the consolation brackets, Hopp posted a 4-3 win after the second tie breaker period.  Each wrestler scored an escape in regulation time and added an escape in each of the tie breaker periods.  The difference between victory and defeat in the Hopp's first elimination match was three seconds in the Peacock wrestler's favor to advance.

Midway through the second period of his second round consolation bracket match, Hopp was caught by Andy Welton of Mercyhurst University and pinned to the mat (4:02).  The loss left Hopp just one win shy of All-American status for the second straight season.

The NSIC had 13 of its 17 wrestlers lock up All-American status after day one of the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships held at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Mo.  The league also had six student-athletes advance to the semifinals of the championship bracket.   St. Cloud State leads the team standings after day one with 47 points, 2.5 points ahead of Nebraska-Kearney.

The Huskies advanced four to the semifinals while all six wrestlers earned All-American status by finishing in the top eight in their bracket.  Tim Prescott (125), Clint Poster (157), Gabe Fogarty (165) and Austin Goergen (285) all went 2-0 on day one to advance to Saturday's semifinal bouts.  Augustana's TJ North (125) and Jayd Docken (197) also advanced to the semifinal round with two wins apiece.

The NCAA National Championships will resume with Session Three beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday while the NCAA National Championship matches will begin at 7 p.m.
