THIS WEEKEND IN MEN'S BASKETBALL Â
The Peacocks (12-8, 8-6 NSIC) return to Fayette for their STORMIN' DORMAN weekend when they take on the Golden Eagles of Minnesota Crookston on Friday, Jan. 30 and the Beavers of Bemidji State on Saturday, Jan. 31. The Golden Eagles are 6-12 so far this season with a 4-10 mark in conference. The Beavers check in at 7-11 overall and 3-11 in NSIC play.
KEY NOTES TO CONSIDERÂ
1 Â Â REBOUNDING FROM A LOSS:Â The Peacocks have responded well following a loss this season, having dropped back-to-back games just once all year. In the game after a loss, UIU is 6-1, including wins over Sioux Falls, Concordia-St. Paul, Winona State and Wayne State by more than 10 points.Â
2 Â Â SAY "HAY" TO JORDAN:Â Junior forward
Jordan Hay has been an all-around player for UIU this season, leading the team in rebounding (5.5 per game), steals (1.4 per game) and blocked shots (14 this season), and is third on the team in scoring (11.2 points per game). Hay is one of only two players in the NSIC that ranks in the top-15 in rebounds, steals and blocked shots (with Augustana's Casey Schilling).
Â
3   FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: UIU is 5-2 when playing on Friday's this season compared to just 7-6 on all other days of the week. The Peacocks have won the last three Fridays, including two overtime games against SMSU (Jan. 9, 105-103) and Minot State (Jan 16, 107-101). 4   COACHES VS CANCER: The Upper Iowa University Coaches vs. Cancer® night will be held on Saturday, January 31 to benefit the American Cancer Society®, the official sponsor of more birthdays. The games will raise funds to help support the Society's efforts to help people in Fayette County stay well, get well, find cures and fight back. The Peacocks will face Bemidji State University, in a double header with the women's game beginning at 4 p.m. and the men's game at 6 p.m.
Â
THE SERIES...VS MINNESOTA CROOKSTON:Â (11-3) - The Peacocks have controlled the series since moving up to NCAA Division II, winning nine of the last ten matchups, including multiple wins in 2007 and 2011.
VS BEMIDJI STATE: (6-10) - The Beavers have been a nemesis for UIU lately, having beaten the Peacocks in four of the last five matchups. The lone recent win, however, did come in Fayette in January, 2013.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS...Â
MINNESOTA CROOKSTON:Â The Golden Eagles are 6-12 overall this season and 4-10 in the NSIC. UMC is 5-4 at home this season, but have compiled just a 1-7 record on the road. They are currently in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, with their last win coming Jan. 2 against U-Mary. Junior Derrick Redd leads the Golden Eagles at 11.6 points per game, while senior Tyler West isn't far behind at 10.5 points per game.BEMIDJI STATE:Â The Beavers are 7-11 and 3-11 in conference. BSU started the season 5-0 with an average winning margin of over 22 points per game. The new year, however, hasn't been kind to the Beavers.
