Summary

Looking to keep a new win streak alive, the Upper Iowa softball team entered Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Sherman Park Field with a full sail of momentum. Unfortunately, Sioux Falls University had other plans for their seniors. The Cougars used two late rallies to post back-to-back wins over UIU and earn the sweep to send their seniors out with a bang. The Peacocks led 1-0 in game one, but were defeated 7-1, and led 2-1 midway through game two before ultimately falling, 5-2. Upper Iowa must now regroup for a tough doubleheader at home this Tuesday against Augustana.

Game One Recap | UIU – 1, USF - 7

After an impressive complete-game victory against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, sophomore pitcher Jacqueline Flood was strong through five innings against the Cougars. The 5-foot-8 right-hander gave up just one run off three hits, while stranding three Cougars on base.

Despite the strong defense, UIU couldn't find any run support until the top of the fourth inning. Fresh off a three-RBI outing in Marshall, Minnesota, Erica Kirgan added to her impressive home-run season total with a solo jack to lead off the fourth inning. But Kirgan's 10th homer of the year was one of just three hits the Peacocks would earn in game one.

The home team battled right back as the Cougars quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a lead-off double, a ground-out that advanced the runner to third and a sacrifice-fly to left field.

After tying the game, 1-1, the Cougar defense tightened up and held UIU hitless and scoreless for the remainder of the game before their bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth. USF scored six runs off five hits to claim the 7-1 victory at home.

USF's senior ace Amanda Walters – who was playing in her final home game for the Cougars –picked up her 17th win of the year as she allowed only three hits and one earned run while striking out eleven.

Game Two Recap | UIU – 2, USF - 5

Upper Iowa bounced back from the opening-game defeat with two early runs in game two. UIU took advantage of a double from Kirgan in the top of the first as Flood scored from first base. The 1-0 lead didn't last long though, as USF answered right back with a solo home run.

In the top of the second UIU capitalized on a Cougar error as Shelby Crist singled, but advanced to second on an overthrow at first base. The extra base gave the junior plenty of time to round the bases and score on a double from Adrienna Olson as the senior put UIU out in front, 2-1.

That 2-1 lead for UIU held until the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a couple stellar innings from Brooke Redmond. After giving up the early home run, the lefty posted three scoreless innings and almost had a fourth, but two errors from the UIU defense helped USF tie the game at 2-2.

The Peacocks couldn't retake the lead in the top of the sixth and watched the home team storm back to get the victory. The Cougars scored three runs off two home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and UIU couldn't find an answer in the top of the seventh.

USF picked up the 5-2 victory dropping UIU to 15-25 overall this year and 8-12 in the NSIC.
