THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK SOFTBALL... Upper Iowa will look to end a four-game skid this Sunday after the schedule was altered due to weather. The Peacocks cancelled their matchup with St. Cloud State, which was originally scheduled for Sunday. Now, UIU will face Minnesota Duluth (14-11, 0-0 NSIC) inside the Husky Dome in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The double-header with the Bulldogs will begin at 6 p.m. The Peacocks hold a 2-10 record against UMD since 2006.
LAST WEEK... The Upper Iowa softball team went 0-2 this past week in the team's final non-conference doubleheader of the season. Two early leads for the Tritons of the University of Missouri - St. Louis proved to be the difference in Wednesday afternoon's twin bill. The Upper Iowa softball team was forced to play catch-up in both games and despite a three-run home run from Erica Kirgan in game one, the home team held on for the pair of wins. The Peacocks 9-3 loss in game one and 5-1 defeat in game two drops UIU to 7-13 in non-conference play this year. The team returned to Fayette only to have their conference-opener with Winona State postponed until further notice. The teams will play later in April per NSIC rules and any official schedule changes will be made available on upperiowaathletics.com.
ON DECK... Following the Peacocks' NSIC-opener this Sunday, UIU will look forward to hosting its first game since last season. The Peacocks and Wildcats of Wayne State are scheduled to face off on Tuesday inside the Eischeid Softball Complex at 1 p.m. Upper Iowa is just 3-12 against the Wildcats since 2006.
CAN YOU DO THAT AH- "KIRGAN?"... Sophomore infielder Erica Kirgan nearly helped the Upper Iowa softball team pull off an improbable comeback this past Wednesday with one swing of her bat. With her team trailing Missouri-St Louis 7-0, the Ankeny, Iowa native stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. Kirgan loaded up and rocketed a pitch over the fence for the three-run jack - her third home run in the last nine days. The bomb was not enough to spark a comeback however, as UIU dropped the game 9-3.
SPECIAL SENIOR SEASON... Senior infielder Adrienna Olson is producing in her final year in the Peacock uniform. The St. Olaf, Iowa native leads the team with a .379 batting average through 20 games. She also ranks first in hits, sac bunts and stolen bases, while earning a top-five ranking in doubles, home runs, RBIs, on-base and slugging percentage, and total bases. Her batting average draws the 15th spot in the NSIC rankings, while her .552 slugging percentage ranks 16th in the conference. Over the last eight games, Olson has earned hits in six of them. Furthermore, the upperclassmen has posted seven two-hit games - most on the team so far this year by four games.
