Recap

Two early leads for the Tritons of the University of Missouri - St. Louis proved to be the difference in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference doubleheader. The Upper Iowa softball team was forced to play catch-up in both games and despite a  three-run home run from Erica Kirgan in game one, the home team's leads were insurmountable. The Peacocks 9-3 loss in game one and 5-1 defeat in game two drops UIU to 7-13 in non-conference play this year. The team returns to Fayette looking ahead to next week's NSIC matchup with Winona State.

Game One Recap

Strong pitching and early run support propelled the Tritons out to a big lead in the opening game. UMSL scored two runs in the first and third innings, while adding a solo run in the second inning. The Peacocks bats were ice cold through the first inning as UIU went without a single hit and fell into a 5-0 hole.

Riley Kruel broke that streak with a single in the top of the fourth, but her teammates couldn't bring her home. Katie Mnichowicz added the Peacocks' second hit of the game in the fifth, but UMSL stranded her as well. The Tritons then added to their lead in the bottom of the inning on an infield error and a wild pitch. The 7-0 lead looked pretty comfortable for the home team, but Erica Kirgan changed that with one swing.

The sophomore first baseman stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. Kirgan loaded up and rocketed a pitch over the fence for the three-run jack - her third home run in the last nine days.

Unfortunately, that's where the run ended. UMSL got out of the inning by earning back-to-back strikeouts before ending the game with two groundouts and another strikeout in the top of the seventh. In all, the Peacocks earned just three hits, while committing two errors. The 9-3 victory gave the home team some momentum heading into the nightcap.

Game Two Recap

Once again, the Peacocks struggled to keep up with the Tritons in the early innings. After UIU stranded a runner in the top of the first, UMSL wasted no time getting a run on the board in the bottom of the inning. A lead-off single kick-started a four-hit and four-run inning for the Tritons. The Peacocks needed a pitching change midway through as Brooklyn Koranda entered the pitching circle for Jacqueline Flood.

The move paid off. Koranda got the Peacocks out of the inning and the offense answered back in the top of the second. After Katie Mnichowicz and Megan Butler drew walks, Katie Sammons brought a runner home with a sac-bunt. The RBI was the second for Sammons in her career as a Peacock as she brought Mnichowicz home from third. UIU cut into the lead and now trailed 4-1, but UMSL went back to work in the third.

The Tritons added an insurance run to take a 5-1 lead after three innings, but UIU couldn't post a comeback. The 5-1 loss pushes Upper Iowa's losing streak to four games.
