Recap
Â
Facing stiff competition, the Upper Iowa softball team responded to early adversity to claim a sweep against two quality opponents on Sunday. The Peacocks have now won three of their last four and are on a roll. In the early game, the Peacocks climbed out of 2-1 hole to defeat the fourth-ranked Lakers of Grand Valley State, 4-2, thanks to clutch hits from
Jacqueline Flood and
Whitney Williams. Then in the second game, UIU faced another deficit. The Flyers of Lewis University - who were trying to avoid an 0-4 start to the season - jumped on UIU early and led 2-0, but UIU responded. The Peacocks tied the game and in the eighth, they scored three runs to seal the 6-4 victory.

Game One Recap
Â
Despite an RBI-single to left from Flood in the top of the first inning, the Lakers bounced right back with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Upper Iowa made a pitching change as
Brooke Redmond hit the turf, and she was sensational. The sophomore held GVSU scoreless for the rest of the game giving up just four hits.
Â
In the top of the sixth,
Riley Kruel beat out a throw to first for a single to lead-off.
Lauren Marlinghaus then ripped one up the middle and over the pitcher's head for a hit and run that helped Kruel take third and Marlinghaus advance to second. Flood stepped to the plate with her team still trailing by a run, and the Mount Vernon, Illinois native delivered. Her ensuing squeeze bunt brought Kruel home from third to tie the game.
Â
Later that inning,
Madie Wilkin scored from third on a passed ball, before Flood reached home plate thanks to an RBI-single from Williams. In all, UIU scored three runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead on the Lakers. Now it was up to the defense and Redmond to seal the win.
Â
GVSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but with two outs Redmond delivered a nasty change-up and earned the strikeout to seal the victory. The 4-2 win gives UIU a 3-8 overall record heading into their final matchup of the D2 Midwest Region Invitational. The Peacocks were not the only team to defeat the Lakers this weekend however. Winona State also earned the upset, defeating GVSU, 6-5, yesterday.
Game Two Recap || Box Score
The Peacocks had the momentum, but they couldn't capitalize on it early against Lewis University. Lewis stole an early 2-0 lead as they drove in two runs in the bottom of the second. Then, in the fourth, the Flyers' Carly Jaworski led off with a base hit to short. Tori Hanford pinch ran for LU and a single pushed her to third. She later scored on a fielder's choice to give UIU a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth,
Jacqueline Flood brought home the Peacocks' first run of the game with an RBI-double to left field.
Riley Kruel scored from third on the play, while
Madie Wilkin took Kruel's place as she advanced from second. The next batter,
Erica Kirgan was walked intentionally before
Shelby Crist took to the batter's box. Crist delivered an infield single that died on the turf between the pitcher and the shortstop. The hit brought Wilkin across the diamond as UIU pulled within one run.
With the bases still loaded,
Whitney Williams drew a walk that brought Flood home from third to tie the game at 3-all.
Neither team broke the tie and the teams headed to extra innings to decide the outcome.
In the eighth,
Cheyenne Burnett was the international run-rule runner as she started the top of the inning on second base. She advanced to third on the sac-bunt by
Adrienna Olson. #Katie Mnichowicz then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to bring Burnett home for the go-ahead run. She advanced to second when the Flyers threw home.
Still in the top of the eighth, Kruel stepped to the plate with a runner on second. She singled to left and also advanced on the throw. Mnichowicz held at third, but gave UIU a golden opportunity. As
Lauren Marlinghaus stepped to the plate, the Peacocks had runners on second and third with just 1 out. Despite the Flyers earning a strikeout, a wild pitch midway through the at-bat brought Mnichowicz across home plate. A batter later, UIU earned another run, on another wild pitch. In all, the Peacocks scored three runs in the top of the eighth and needed just three outs to seal the victory.
Lewis didn't make it entirely too easy. The Flyers added a run, but the Peacocks ended the inning with a pop-fly to left and a strikeout. The 6-4 victory bumps UIU's win streak to three games. In those contests, the Peacocks have scored a total of 19 runs.
Sounding Off
Head Coach Amanda Bradberry after the game...
Thoughts on the entire day... "I thought it was really good to see some fight from our team. We were down in both games, so it was good to see them flush that and overcome adversity. That's something we haven't been very good at early in the season, but today we did it extremely well. So overall, I am excited about our team."
Thoughts on having to come back in each game... "Katie Mnichowicz said it perfectly after the Lewis game, 'Good teams find a way to win and we're a good team.' That spoke volumes about our play today. We were down in a hole, but we found a way to win. I hope that mindset carries over into practice next week and into next weekend."
Who played well... "It was a true team effort. They were twoÂ
big team wins and multiple people stepped up. There wasn't one or two stars today. Jacqueline had a good number of RBIs this weekend, but all three of our wins this weekend were team wins."
Thoughts on your pitching... "Jacqueline didn't have a great start against GVSU, but she came back and pitched a great second game. We had some mishaps and the umpire had a really tight strike zone, but between our two pitchers they were able to play off each other and be successful. When one of them wasn't sharp, the other one was - that was good to see and it gives us a lot of confidence."
