SHAWNEE, KAN. - Upper Iowa (5-19) split the final two games of the Midwest Classic on Saturday. The Peacocks lost to Wayne State (Neb.) (12-1), 3-2, but beat Newman (Kan.) (3-8), 7-0.
Sara Reid guided the Peacocks to win over Newman after performing well on the mound and at the plate. She had two hits with a double, three RBIs and scored a run. The Central City native was also on the mound for seven innings, only allowing one hit and not giving up any runs. She had a strikeout and walked two batters.
Emma Tautges had three hits with a double and an RBI in the two games. Cara Farnam totaled three hits, three RBIs and scored two runs. The junior also recorded her first home run of the season. Dani Laughlin had two hits, an RBI, two walks and scored two runs.
UIU takes a week break from game action before beginning GLVC play on March 13-14. The team travels to face Lewis (Ill.) (3-7) on March 13 in a doubleheader, returning home the next day to face No. 11 UIndy (12-1) in another doubleheader.
Wayne State 3, Upper Iowa 2
Farnam gave Upper Iowa its first run in the second inning after hitting a solo home run. Jordyn Rochholz and Jordyn Klein scored for Wayne State in the third after reaching home plate.
The Peacocks tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Laughlin connected for a left field single at the start of the inning. Farnam brought home Laughlin on a left single of her own.
In the seventh inning, Rochholz hit a one-out single and stole second. Leah Chance followed later with a two-out walk-off single to left field, bringing in Rochholz for the game-winning run.
Laughlin posted a hit and scored a run, while Reagon Proud also posted a hit. Farnam finished with two RBIs, two hits and scored a run. The Lincoln, Illinois native also pitched for 6.2 innings, giving up three earned runs with no walks and nine hits. She added five strikeouts on the night.
Chance contributed two hits and two RBIs, while Rochholz contributed two hits and scored two runs. Klein accounted for a hit and scored a run. Jadeyn Stahr threw 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk. She also recorded two strikeouts.
UIU totaled four hits, two RBIs, a walk and left four batters on base. WSC had nine hits, three RBIs, two errors and left five runners on base.
Upper Iowa 7, Newman 0
All of UIU's seven runs came in the fourth inning. Jescie Comstock, Addyson Alber, Proud and Laughlin walked, bringing in Comstock to score. After that, Reid connected for a 3RBI double to center field.
Farnam drove home another run after hitting a left field single. Tautges followed her in the next at bat with an RBI right field single. Alber hit a single to shortstop, allowing Farnam to score the seventh run.
Upper Iowa held on to win, 7-0, despite Newman's final seventh-inning efforts. UIU walked the first two NU batters before putting out the next three. It was the only inning where Newman had more than three batters come to the plate.
Tautges totaled three hits, two hits and scored a run. Alber and Laughlin each had a hit, an RBI, a walk and scored a run. Reid recorded three RBIs, two hits, and scored a run. She also threw for seven innings, not allowing a run or walk. She gave up a hit and struck out a batter.
AJ Borja had the Jets' only hit, coming in the third inning. Lani Dryden and Lauren McNaught both accounted for a walk. MaKenna Majors pitched for 3.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits and six walks. The Wichita, Kansas, native also netted a strikeout
Upper Iowa had seven hits, seven RBIs, nine walks and left 10 runners on base. Newman posted a hit, two walks, three errors and left two runners on base.
