SHAWNEE, KAN. - Upper Iowa (4-20) ended the first day of the Midwest Classic with a 4-3 win over Augustana (S.D.) (3-4) on Thursday. UIU fell, 18-1, earlier in the evening to Fort Hays State (Kan.) (5-5)
Sara Reid picked up her fourth win of the season after pitching seven innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and no walks against Augustana. She also had her first home run and double of the season at the plate. The Central City native struck out five batters, had four RBIs, tallied three hits and scored a run.
Upper Iowa continues the tournament tomorrow by playing Central Missouri (9-2) at 3 p.m. and No. 17 Oklahoma (13-4) at 5:30 p.m. The Bronchos face the Vikings at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
Fort Hays State 18, Upper Iowa 1
The Tigers struck first by ripping off six runs in the second inning. Kaydawn Hagg hit a triple, bringing home two of the runs. Audrey Gillespie hit a home run, allowing herself and two others to reach home plate, and the Peacocks committed an error, allowing another run to score.
Fort Hays State added nine more runs during the third and fourth innings to extend its lead to 12-0. Lily Mohr hit a home run to start the third inning. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, a walk by Peyton Shepa allowed third base to cross home plate. The final four runs off the third happened on singles by Abbey Duarte and Mohr.
The three runs in the fourth were scored off a Shepa single, a passed ball allowing Hannah Green to come home from third and a dropped fly by UIU, allowing Shepa to score from third. In the top of the fifth, Green tripled to bring in two runners, and she later scored herself after Shepa brought her in on a groundout.
Elliott Pomeroy answered for the Peacocks in the bottom by singling to right field, which was UIU's first hit of the game. Later, Reagon Proud and Mara Sivley walked to load the bases. Jescie Comstock then drove home Pomeroy after hitting a single toward third base to put the Peacocks on the board.
Pomeroy had a hit and scored a run, while Comstock had a hit and an RBI. Proud and Sivley each walked once. Sivley also pitched five innings on the mound, giving up eight earned runs on 15 hits and six walks.
Green totaled three hits, three RBIs and scored four runs. Hagg had three hits, two RBIs and scored three runs. Duarte earned her first win of the season after pitching three innings, allowing an earned run on two hits and two walks.
Upper Iowa recorded five runners left on base, was walked twice and connected for two hits. Fort Hays State left nine runners on base, walked six times and had 15 hits. The Peacocks totaled six errors, to the Tigers' one.
Upper Iowa 4, Augustana 3
Augustana scored a run in the first inning off a Claire Wynja groundout that allowed a runner to score. Upper Iowa answered in the top of the fourth with a run of its own. Pomeroy walked and was later brought home by a Reid center-field double. In the bottom of the inning, the Vikings scored two runs off a Briana Lee double to retake the advantage, 3-1.
Reid responded in the sixth inning with a three-run homer to take a 4-3 lead. Farnam took second with a double to left field, and Pomeroy found first after being walked before the senior drove them home. Reid's home run allowed UIU to win 4-3, after she allowed zero hits in the bottom of both the sixth and seventh innings on the mound.
Proud had two hits and scored a run, while Dani Laughlin had a hit. Pomeroy posted a hit, walked twice and scored two runs.
Reid recorded four RBIs, three hits and scored a run. The senior was a star on the mound, pitching seven innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and zero walks. She also had five strikeouts. Reid picked up her fourth win of the season.
Lee had a hit and two RBIs for Augustana, while Sidney Smart had two hits and scored a run. Helene Krage pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks. She also struck out three batters.
The Peacocks left six runners on base, walked twice and connected on seven hits. The Vikings left three runners on base and recorded six hits.
