Summary
The Upper Iowa softball team's struggles continued on Sunday as a late comeback against Ouachita Baptist University fell short and Southern Nazarene swiped a victory for the grasp of the Peacocks in game two. The Tigers of OBU jumped on UIU early and often in game one and led 5-0 after three innings. The Peacocks managed two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough as OBU sealed the 8-3 victory in game one. Game two was a much different story. UIU led 1-0 through four innings, but SNU scored three runs in the fifth en route to a 3-2 victory.
Game 1 Recap
The Peacocks didn't get the start they were looking for on Sunday morning. The Peacocks made it out of the first inning safely, but Ouachita Baptist University jumped all over UIU in the second and third innings. The Tigers earned an RBI-single in the first before scoring four runs in the third, including a solo homer from Kailey Madden.
Tara Duran doubled in the bottom of the fourth to put UIU on the board for the first time.
Katie Sammons scored from second on the play as she pinch ran for
Jacqueline Flood – who led off the inning with a double.
Unfortunately, UIU couldn't slow the Tigers' offense. OBU scored three more runs in the fifth inning – runs that would eventually seal the win.
The Peacocks' comeback began in the fifth. After a groundout,
Adrienna Olson doubled. #Katie Mnichowicz then stepped to the plate and homered to pull UIU within five runs, 8-3. But that's where the comeback stopped. The Tigers ended the inning and held the Peacocks scoreless for the final two innings to earn the victory.
Game 2 Recap
Game two presented a redo opportunity for UIU. The Peacocks took advantage of their fresh start against the Crimson Storm by scratching the scoreboard first. In the bottom of the third,
Shelby Crist roped a base-hit down the left-field line. Olson then stepped to the plate and made contact with a ball that also landed in the left field. The pair stole second and third before
Riley Kruel brought Crist home with a single up the middle.
Southern Nazarene responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.
The Peacocks earned one final run, but it wasn't enough. Flood homered over the left-field wall, but SNU shut UIU down for the final inning and a half to solidify the victory, 3-2.
Stat of the Day
