Summary

Through seven innings, the Peacocks and the Hawks of Quincy University were neck and neck. UIU collected two runs in the second and fifth innings before tying the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. But UIU couldn't pull out the win. Quincy scored four runs in the top of the eighth to seal the 9-6 victory. In the second of two outings, UIU managed five runs off 11 hits, but UAM never trailed. The Blossoms raced out to a 6-0 lead before UIU closed the gap to two runs after the sixth inning, 7-5, but the comeback fell short. UAM scored the final three runs and earned the 10-5 victory. The Peacocks fall to 1-5 overall after being swept for the second time in two days.

Game 1 Recap

Not wasting any time in their 9:30 a.m. matchup, the Hawks jumped on UIU quickly. After a lead-off groundout in the top of the first, infielder Kelsey Ley sent a pitch over the left-field wall to give Quincy a 1-0 lead after one. The Hawks added two more runs in the top of the second before UIU scratched the scoreboard.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Whitney Williams stepped to the plate. Her ensuing hit forced an error at third base as Erica Kirgan crossed home plate. A batter later, Katie Mnichowicz was hit by a pitch, bringing in another UIU runner.

The Hawks had an answer though – another home run in the top of the third pushed QU out to a 4-2 lead.

In the fifth, Jacqueline Flood and Adrienna Olson ensured a tied ball game thanks to solo RBIs. Flood doubled to left-center bringing Riley Kruel across the plate, while Olson singled and Kayla Bergman scored.

The 5-5 tie lasted until the top of the seventh when Quincy added the go-ahead run on an RBI-single. UIU had an answer though. Flood stepped to the plate again and drove in the tying run with a sacrifice-fly to left. Any Peacock momentum gained from the run was lost shortly thereafter.

Ley earned another RBI with a single as QU took a 6-5 lead. That advantage quickly turned into a four-run hole for the Peacocks though as Emma Topps connected on a three-run home run.

The Peacocks managed one final run on a passed ball, but the comeback fell short. The Hawks wrapped up the 9-6 victory in extra-innings.

Game Two Recap

Four scoreless innings hurt the Peacocks in game two against the tournament hosts – the Blossoms of the University of Arkansas at Monticello. UAM outscored UIU 6-0 through the fourth, but the Peacocks fought hard to climb back into the game.

Kruel helped the Peacocks scratch the scoreboard with a triple to left-center, which brought Olson and Mnichowicz around the bags and home. Then, Flood doubled to the same spot as Kruel crossed home plate. The Blossoms ended the inning, but UIU had all the momentum.

After adding another run in the bottom of the fifth, the Peacocks went back to work on offense. Olson roped a solo home run over the right-field wall to make it a three-score game, 7-4. Then Kruel stepped into the batter's box again. The freshman, who has proved to be a significant contributor to the team already, lined a double to right-center and picked up her third RBI of the game as Mnichowicz scored from first.

Unfortunately, the Peacock offense couldn't muster anything else. UAM added three runs to their count before all was said and done. UIU dropped the 10-5 decision and suffered its second sweep in as many days.

Stat of the Day

Adrienna "Missy" Olson now has five career home runs as a Peacock. The senior totaled three in her freshman year and one last year.
