Huskies Bite Down to Clinch NSIC Championship

#3 St. Cloud State 28 - #6 Upper Iowa 6

The #3 St. Cloud State Huskies (19-1, 8-0 NSIC) clinched the Northern Sun Conference Championship Saturday afternoon in central Minnesota with a 28-6 vicotry over the Peacocks. The Huskies claimed eight of the ten matches including a tech fall and two major decisions. With the loss, Upper Iowa falls to 14-2-1 on the season and 6-1 in the NSIC.

Upper Iowa trailed 12-0 before Edwin Cooper (#2 NWCA) took the mat at 149 pounds. Cooper had to work from behind to gain his 4-2 victory, but the win put UIU on the board for the first time. After a first period takedown, Cooper led 2-1 heading to the second frame, but Jay Hildreth rode the Chicago native for the entire period putting a ride time point in his pocket. An escape by the Husky tied the match at 2-2, but Cooper knew he would need to score to overcome the riding time. UIU's grappler scored the winning takedown in the final period and won the match 4-2.

The Huskies returned to the win column at four straight weights. Tight decisions against Zak Benitz, 5-2, and Dalton Westerlund (#8 NWCA), 4-2, pushed the home team's lead to 18-3. The dual was decided over the 174 and 184 pound matches as SCSU earned a 10-1 major and a hard fought 4-2 decision over Brock Gobin.

Carl Broghammer secured UIU's second win of the night with a 3-1 victory at 197. The Manchester, Iowa product earned an escape and then a takedown in the third period that nearlly turned into more. Chris Brassell was able to quickly work off his back, but Broghammer earned his 134th career win. He is now just three wins away from the all-time wins mark at Upper Iowa.

In the duals final match, a pair of nationally-ranked heavyweights got together. Austin Goergen (#3) got the better of UIU's Logan Hopp (#6 NWCA) in a 12-5 decision that set the final score at 28-6.

The Peacocks will be back on the mat tomorrow afternoon in Fayette with a 2 p.m. dual against Augustana College. UIU will look to lock down sole possession of second place in the NSIC tomorrow, while the Vikings are working for a share of the runner-up title.

Upper Iowa will honor their three seniors (Broghammer, Trevor Duke and Lucas Sharp) prior to the dual and will also celebrate Alumni Day throughout the afternoon. Youth duals will be taking place all morning in Dorman and a few featured matches will take center stage midway through the Peacocks and Vikings dual.
