Â
Summary
Â
Despite a few bombs over the fence, the Upper Iowa softball team did not like what they saw on Friday as they partook in the 8-State Classic. UIU gave up nine runs to the Gorillas of Pittsburg State in game one and the Peacocks couldn't get across home plate in game two. The team dropped both games on day one of the tournament falling to PSU, 9-5, and dropping their second game to Missouri Western State, 2-0.
Game 1 Recap
Â
The Gorilla's Tiffany Brown seemed unstoppable on Friday morning. PSU's right fielder homer twice against the Peacocks, scored four runs and earned a total of 6 RBIs in the win.
Â
In the bottom of the first, the Gorillas scratched the scoreboard first as center fielder Brenna George scored from first on an Alex Perez sac bunt and a Peacock throwing error. Before the inning was over, PSU added another run off a double to left-center. It didn't get any easier for UIU in the second as the Gorillas kept up the heat with the first of two home runs from Brown – this one a three-run shot over the left-field wall.
Â
In the third, the Peacocks cut into the 5-0 PSU lead thanks to a little fire power of their own.
Jacqueline Flood sent a two-run shot screaming down the left-field line and over the fence to get UIU on the board.
Â
Now down by just three runs, the Peacocks headed to the bottom of the third with a little momentum. The Peacocks got what they wanted. UIU stranded two PSU runners to end the inning and moved to the fourth looking to tie the game, but the offense faltered.
Â
With one out, the Peacocks popped up and were caught off the bag at first for an inning-ending double play.
Â
Brown helped the Gorillas add four more runs before the Peacocks could even blink. In the bottom of the fourth she scored from third on a groundout. Then in the sixth, Brown connected on another home run giving PSU a 9-2 lead.
Â
The Peacocks earned a three-run home run in the top of the seventh from
Katie Mnichowicz, but it wasn't enough. PSU wrapped up the win on a game-ending fly ball.
Â
Despite Mnichowicz's second career home run, and Flood's fifth, the Peacocks dropped the 9-5 decision and fell to 1-2 on the season, while the Gorillas begin the new season 1-0.

Game Two Recap
Â
Despite a gutsy performance in the pitching circle from Flood, the Peacocks couldn't manage the run support needed to knock off Missouri Western State in their season-opener.
Â
The afternoon game was decided by two runs. The first came in the fourth inning. Flood gave up an inning-opening double before another two-bag rip brought Kailey Green home from second to give MWSU a 1-0 lead.
Â
In the sixth, with
Brooke Redmond on the rubber for UIU, the Griffons needed just two mistakes and a single to get around the bases. Tiffany Gillaspy singled to lead off the inning before advancing to second on a groundout. She then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
Â
The two runs were enough for the win as UIU struggled mightily on offense. Jackie Bishop pitched a complete game for the Griffons giving up just one hit, while striking out nine Peacock batters. The 2-0 loss drops UIU to 1-3 to start the 2014 season.
