Recap

The Peacock volleyball team opened their play in the UW-Parkside Tournament today. Upper Iowa lost a hard-fought, five-set match with the #19 Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis before dropping a match to Lewis University in straight sets.

Against the #19 Greyhounds, the Peacocks were up to the task and had chances in all three sets they lost to upset their nationally-ranked opponents. After dropping the first set, 27-25, Upper Iowa bounced right back with wins in sets two and three by scores of 25-22 and 25-21. UIU hit their highest percentage in the third set (.324) with 17 kills and just 6 errors. The Peacocks held a two-point lead late in set four, but fell 28-26. In the deciding set, UIU jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, but the experienced U-Indy team battled back to win the set 15-10 and claim the victory.

After the tough loss to U-Indy, the Peacocks had a rough outing against Lewis. UIU's offense had trouble getting going as they posted just 31 kills, while Lewis racked up 46. The Flyers came out on top in all three sets as the Peacocks managed 19, 17 and 19 points.

Sounding Off

Head Coach Aaron Nelson after the match.

On the U-Indy match...
"We played really well against U-Indy and had chances in the first and fourth sets to close them out, but just couldn't get the job done. To be tied at 24-24 in set one, be up 22-20 in set four and lead 6-1 in set five are indicators that we are close, but this group of young ladies will have to learn how to win these close matches."

On the Lewis match... "We just came out a bit slow against Lewis and we weren't able to recover. They dictated the tempo of the match and we just never got our hitters rolling."

Next Up

The Peacocks return to the court tomorrow at noon to face Gannon University. UIU will then compete against the host Rangers of UW-Parkside at 5 p.m.
