Box Score 2 FAYETTE, IA – The 2013 Upper Iowa Softball team has set all sorts of school records in Division II play under current Head Coach Anna Van Wetzinga. Sunday marked another record-setting day as UIU posted a total of 22 runs and 27 hits off the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota Crookston. In game one, senior
Hailley Haning racked up five runs batted in against UMC, while the offense scored a total of 14 runs in the first inning alone en route to a 15-2 win after just five innings.
The Peacocks’ defense then carried UIU through game two, shutting out the Golden Eagles to earn a 7-0 victory in conference play and secure the Sunday, and the weekend sweep. With the victories, the Peacocks improve to 28-14 overall this year and 15-7 in the conference – both of which are Division II records for UIU.
Furthermore, the 2013 Peacock squad not only set a record with two weekend sweeps in NSIC play during the season, but the Peacocks also scored a program-best 59 runs over this past weekend.
"Everyone came out ready to play and I am really proud of my teammates," said Haning, who's a team captain this year. "We played our style and we were able to capatilize on our hits today."
Game One Recap
The Peacocks wasted no time jumping on their guests in the first of two contests with UMC. After
Whitney Williams was the first to get on base with a double,
Hailley Haning brought her home with her first RBI of the day. Three batters later and with the bases loaded,
Bailee Haberman was walked to give the Peacocks a 2-0 lead.
Tara Duran then earned her first RBI of the day as she was hit by a pitch and
Lauren Marlinghaus crossed home plate.
Adrienna Olson singled to bring home a run before
Katie Mnichowicz unloaded two of the bags with a single to left.
Still with just one out, lead-off hitter
Rachael Anello went back up to the plate. After a single from Anello, Williams brought a runner home with a base hit to left. With the bases still loaded, Haning unloaded them in a hurry with a three-run double to left centerfield.
"I just try to make solid contact when I'm up there," Haning said. "When you are aiming for base hits those extra-base hits will come eventually."
The Golden Eagles earned a pop-up from Marlinghaus for out number two before the scoring barrage continued with a RBI-single from
Jacqueline Flood. Olson then completed the parade with a bases-clearing, three-run double down the leftfield line.
In all, the Peacocks had 14 runs off 12 hits and they had only played one half of an inning.
The Golden Eagles did respond with home runs in the bottom of the first and second innings, but UIU had its lead and coasted to the 15-2 victory through just five innings.
Despite the four-bag jacks from UMC,
Brooke Redmond was solid through five innings earning her 14th victory and 14th complete game of the season. Her 14 total wins ranks second all-time at UIU trailing only Angie Weber who had 15 in 2004.
Haning and Olson combined for nine RBIs in game one, while Mnichowicz posted two and Haberman, Flood, Williams and Duran all added one.
Game Two Recap
It took a bit longer for UIU to get its offense going in game two, but the Peacocks produced runs in bunches. In the top of the third, Williams laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt that brought Mnichowicz home from third. Then, Haning singled up the middle to earn her sixth RBI of the day as Williams scored from second base.
"I've just been trying to stay relaxed at the plate," Williams said afterwards. "Coach Bradberry tells me to stay on-line, stay tall and keep my hands short to the ball. That's just what I have been trying to do and it's been working lately."
The Peacocks held their 2-0 lead until the top of the fifth inning. Anello worked to get on base with a bunt before stealing second base moments later. Williams then earned her third run batted in of the day with a single up the middle. Marlinghaus added run number four for UIU with a double to centerfield, before
Erica Kirgan continued her hot streak with two more RBIs off a single to right. Kirgan finished the weekend with ten RBIs, while Haning earned a team-high 13.
Olson capped off the Peacocks’ scoring raid and her impressive afternoon with her second RBI-double of the day, this one to left field. Olson’s only RBI of game two, but fifth of the day, gave the Peacocks a 7-0 lead and the defense did the rest.
Flood was impressive from the rubber going all seven innings, not allowing a single run off three hits en route to her 10th victory of the season. The defense also didn’t commit a single error behind her, ensuring the Peacocks’ fifth shutout of the year.
With the 7-0 victory, the Peacocks sealed the books on a magical 2013 season, which included many record-breaking individual performances.
Haning shattered a number of records, the most outstanding of which was her school-record 38 RBIs in 2013. Haning also now holds the third spot in the record books with a career batting average of .369, the 6th spot for career doubles with 23, the 8th spot with 121 career hits and Haning finishes 7th all-time with 66 career RBIs.
Haning just barely missed her single season mark of 66 hits (2nd all-time) from 2012 as she finished with 55 in 2013 (tied for 5th all-time). She did however tie for tenth all-time at UIU with 146 at-bats in a single season.
Lauren Marlinghaus, Haning, Anello and Haberman all cracked the top-ten list with double-digit two-baggers from this past year, while Anello finished tied for seventh all-time with 5 home runs, ninth with a .585 slugging percentage and tied for ninth all-time with 50 hits in a season.
Tara Duran cracked the top ten all-time list with a .475 on-base percentage which is tied for ninth all-time, while her .417 batting average - which led UIU throughout 2013 - finished fifth in the books.
Finally, Mnichowicz moved into a tie with Haning for fifth all-time in school history with a total of 33 runs scored in a season. Mnichowicz also tied her freshman mark of 13 stolen bases, which ranks seventh all-time. Anello rounds out the records with a seventh place finish in the books with 32 runs scored this season.
The Peacocks can now look forward to their first playoff trip in four years. The Northern Sun Conference Tournament will be played in Rochester, Minnesota on May 2-4. The brackets will be released later this week.
