Truman State 11, Upper Iowa 5 || TSU-8, UIU -7

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Truman State Bulldogs jumped on the Peacock softball team early and often on Saturday afternoon as the two squads squared off in Kirskville, Missouri. After a sweep yesterday, UIU had some momentum heading into game one, but that quickly disappeared. With two runners on in the first inning, the Bulldogs' Kristin Grossman homered over the right centerfield wall to put her team up 3-0. TSU led throughout the contest, never letting off the gas as they rolled over UIU in the first game, 13-5. In the second game, the Peacocks scored four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at seven, but the Bulldogs earned the decisive go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to steal the 8-7 victory at home.

After the weekend split, UIU sits at 11-7 overall this year. The Peacocks will now return to Fayette, but not for long as their next scheduled game is for Tuesday afternoon against Lewis University in the Rosemount Dome in Rosemount, Illinois. That game will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Game 1 Recap

Even after Grossman’s homerun in the first inning, the Bulldogs weren’t satisfied with their 3-0 lead.

After holding the Peacocks scoreless in the top of the second inning, TSU's Kelsey Bollman connected on an RBI-single to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 4-0 before Liz Leath doubled down the left field line to score two more runners. By that time, Grossman had made her way back to the plate and hurt the Peacocks again, this time with a 1-run double.

The Peacocks answered with a run of their own in the top of the third inning after an RBI from Jacqueline Flood scored Bailee Haberman, but the Bulldogs bounced right back with a grand slam.

Bulldog left-fielder Laura Miller connected on the 4-run shot over the left field wall as TSU took a strong 11-3 lead heading into the fourth.

UIU fought back with their most impressive offensive inning of the day. First, Katie Mnichowicz connected on a two-run single down the left field line which sent Tara Duran and Adrienna Olson home. Then, Haberman doubled to right centerfield, which plated Whitney Williams and Mnichowicz, but the Peacocks could come no closer.

TSU ended the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to take the decisive 13-5 victory.

Game 2 Recap

Jacqueline Flood, who has been an instant impact as a freshman this year for the Peacocks, slammed an RBI-single into right field in the first inning, scoring Hailley Haning. It was Flood’s only RBI of the game, but she now has an impressive team-high 12 RBI through 18 games this year.

The Bulldogs responded with a run of their own from Leath in the bottom of the first to tie the game, but UIU was determined to get its lead back.

With the bases loaded in the top of the second, Haning was hit with a pitch and Tara Duran made the short trip home from third base. An inning later, Adrienna Olson connected on her 10th RBI of the season, which sent Duran across the plate again. Olson finished the weekend was three RBI on just three hits.

With TSU now trailing, 3-1, Grossman was back at the plate. She picked right back up where she left off in the first game as she homered over the centerfield wall on a three-run shot which gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.

But the inning wasn’t over. Bolleman continue the barrage as she connected on an RBI-single, before Andrea Klipsch hit another home run, this one a two-run shot over the right field wall to give TSU a 7-3 lead.

Again, UIU battled back.

In the top of the fifth, Duran roped an RBI-single to left center as Lauren Marlinghaus came around to score. The Peacocks earned two more runs batted in before Haberman reached base on an error and Olson passed home plate. The four-run fifth inning for the Peacocks tied the game at 7-7.

Despite some offensive momentum, UIU could not hold the Bulldogs scoreless in the bottom of the sixth. Another home run from Klipsch sealed the 8-7 TSU victory as the Bulldogs improved to 12-4 this season and the Peacocks fell to 11-7.

In all, the Peacocks allowed five home runs to the Bulldogs on Saturday and have now allowed 14 homers this season.

The Peacocks will now return to Fayette, but not for long as their next scheduled game is for Tuesday afternoon against Lewis University in the Rosemount Dome in Rosemount, Illinois. That game will begin at 10:30 a.m.
