ROCHESTER, MN. – The Upper Iowa softball team jumped on the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside early in game one of their double-header inside the RCTC Dome on Friday afternoon. But UIU watched a 4-0 lead turn into a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth.
Brooke Redmond held strong in the circle, going a full seven innings and earning her fifth victory of the season, 4-3. The Peacocks had another big lead in the nightcap game, but this time, the Rangers posted an impressive comeback to earn the 10-9 victory. The split pushes the Peacocks’ record to 5-4 early in the 2013 season, while the Rangers moved to 3-5 overall.
“I would have liked to keep the pressure on them more throughout the game,” Head Coach Anna Van Wetzinga said about game one. “We scored early, but then settled and let them back in the game. Fortunately, Hailley Haning came up with a big hit when we needed it most.”
Haning, who finished last season with a team-high .361 batting average, has started the new season slowly, but her shot in the top of the fifth put the Peacocks up for good in the opening game as Whitney Willaims came around to score.
Despite giving up three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Redmond locked up the win, going all seven innings and allowing just five hits.
Adrienna Olson had a two-run RBI single, while Racheal Anello earned a double and went a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate.
In the second of two games on Friday, Van Wetzinga saw the Rangers make another comeback, but this time, it helped UWP pull off the 10-9 victory.
“We gave them way too many extra opportunities with errors,” Van Wetzinga said about game two. “To Parkside’s credit, they made the most of our mistakes with timely hits. We battled back well with three runs in the 7th, but we had put ourselves in too big of a hole.”
UIU controlled a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the third, but UWP outscored the Peacocks 8-1 over the next four innings.
Tara Duran and
Hailley Haning both had two big doubles for UIU in the game. Duran finished 4-for-4 from the plate with two RBI, while Haning was also a perfect 3-for-3 with her second RBI of the day.
Bailee Haberman,
Katie Mnichowicz,
Lauren Marlinghaus, Anello, Olson and Flood also drove in a run in the game, but the Peacocks three-run seventh inning fell just short and UIU lost, 10-9.
The Peacocks will be back in action tomorrow as they take on the Vikings of Grand View College in another double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside the RCTC Dome.
