Final Results
Upper Iowa hosted the Northern State Wolves this afternoon in Dorman Gym for a conference dual. The Peacocks won decisively, 41-3, only surrendering the final match to improve their dual record to 7-3 overall including 3-1 in NSIC action. Four wrestlers recorded pins for UIU, increasing their team total to 132, which leads all college divisions.
In the opening match,
Chris Paulus trailed 3-0 entering the third period but would battle back. Paulus elected to start in the neutral position. He quickly worked his opponent to the mat with a throw and earned a fall at the 5:50 mark.
Trevor Franklin (#2 NCAA) wasted no time in his match, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead following a takedown and three near fall points. He added three more back points in the closing seconds of the initial period to lead 8-0. Franklin took down his opponent two times in the opening minute of the second period before pinning him with less than a minute remaining in frame number two.
Matt Paulus earned a takedown and traded reversals with his opponent to lead the match 4-2 entering the second period. Paulus earned more than four minutes of riding time before the second period expired, but a late stall infraction would decrease his lead to 4-3 entering the final period. He escaped and took down his opponent one final time before being reversed in the final seconds. He earned a point for riding time to win the match 8-5.
In the 149-pound match,
Jordan Rinken used a productive second period to win 12-1. He earned a quick escape and takedown before earning three near fall points. He would take down his opponent two more times and earn points for a stalling infraction and riding time.
Bryce Lumzy toed the line in the next match taking his opponent down quickly and surrendering an escape to enter the second period leading 2-1. His opponent chose the down position and Lumzy would work him to his back and win by fall in the closing seconds.
In the next match,
Wade Gobin (#4 NCAA) earned three takedowns and an escape en route to a 7-2 victory. The Peacocks led 28-0 following the match, heading into the 174 pound class.
Blake Sorensen (#8 NCAA) dominated his opponent and recorded six takedowns and a reversal in a 15-5 decision.
Upper Iowa’s next wrestler,
Brock Gobin, entered the third period trailing 1-0. Gobin earned an early escape and a takedown in the final 20 seconds to win the match 3-1.
Top-ranked
Carl Broghammer took his opponent down in the first 30 seconds and earned three near fall points before pinning his opponent at the 2:27 mark. The win marks his 17th straight victory and 4th straight win by fall.
Upper Iowa led 41-0 entering the final match.
Jeremy Brazil squared up against Matt Meuleners, the two-time defending heavyweight champion. Brazil escaped out of two of Meulener’s three takedowns but fell in the match 8-2.
The Peacocks take the mat again Friday night in Marshall, Minnesota as they square off against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m. Saturday afternoon they travel to Moorhead, Minnesota to grapple with the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead at 3 p.m.
